CIAMPI: THANKS TO RAI ITALIANS SPEAK ITALIAN
(AGI) - Rome, Italy, January 1 - Shortly after midnight last night,
President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, went down to the
piazza in front of the Presidential Palace and heard the Umbria
orchestra play the national anthem composed by Mameli. With him were
his chief advisors: Gaetano Gifuni, in a blue coat with a red scarf,
Sapio, Biraghi, Alfonso, Ruffo. Ciampi and his wife, Franca sang the
anthem. Next to them, the president of the Rai, Lucia Annunziata.
Afterwards, Ciampi praised the Rai, the Italian public television,
and said: "Thanks to its role in the unification of the country; it
gave a common language to all Italians even though not appreciated by
