I don't know what processor it was, but you could be right. We had
the arcade machine in the office at Ocean so that we could copy it,
but all I did was to play it, look at it and copy it. I don't know
enough about hardware to think about how it worked (it had a lot of
electronics inside!)

I really appreciate everyone's English is very good. I wish I could
speak even a tiny bit of your language to show my appreciation.
>Have you changed your address? What about Spectrum Zone?
Yes, it's the new URL. Spectrum Zone is alive, of course. Moreover, it is the biggest section of my page, with 225 games -and more in near future-. But I decided months ago to include other important computers in Spain in my page. In January I made Amiga Zone, and after I continue adding zones (now there are seven and more than 550 games total, with 450 visitors/day (!!) ).
I don't tell you this because the old URL continues working (as a redirection), but if you want you can change the link in your page to http://emuzone.metropoli2000.net

:-) Yes, it's obvious that spaniards like our games, but it's really good that an foreign programmer likes too.

It increased a lot since 1988, but also in 1987 there was a big production.

In Spain, a distributor called "Erbe" distributed games of Ocean/Imagine, U.S. Gold, Hewson, Gremlin...It was the biggest company and, really, they put special attention in Ocean games.

I think the conversion was perfect. The coin-op -I think- has a Z80 processor (is it?). The graphics, obviously, aren't the same, but the game I think was near exactly.

Maybe "Batman - The caped crusader"? Or the last, "Batman - The movie"?
I think the first, that shows a window for each room, just like a
cartoon.

I tried R-Type for the first time last week - it is fantastic! But
this is after a lot of experience of Spectrum programming - most of
the games got much better after 1986. I haven't tried Shadow of the
Beast yet, but I will. Thanks for the recommendation ;-)

They featured Batman walking around in a view similar to Tir Na Nog,
or Frankie. It was like a cartoon and he would walk around, picking
things up. All by Ocean.

Maybe you missed the two game that I consider the absolute masterpieces

John was one of the freelance programmers that Ocean used - and a
fantastic programmer too. Unfortunately he was never in the office
while I was there, so I never had the chance to meet him and know as
much about him as you do.

Green Beret was written by my best friend - Jonathan Smith (a.k.a.
Joffa Smifff). He was an absolute genius as a programmer and artist
and wrote dozens of games. He also wrote Cobra - which was mentioned
in a previous posting. He had scroll routines that others could not
match.
He was writing Green Beret while I was writing Ping Pong and they
were reviewed in the same issue of Crash. I got just a little better
review, but could not believe it because his program was much better.
I suppose Ping Pong looked more different to other games. Joff did a
*lot* of scrolling games, but that was because Ocean/Imagine knew
that he was good so they kept him very busy.
Long live Joffa - a proper programming hero

Runaway Robot
Beatcha
Pud Pud
Kong Strikes Back
Daley Thompson's SuperTest and Decathlon (shared)

Spain was probably the biggest overseas market for the Spectrum and
was the second home of the Spectrum I think. I don't know much about
the programming in Spain because I think it increased after I left
games.
Ocean put a lot of work in to selling games in Spain, much more than
other software houses.
Thanks for the kind words about Ping Pong. I was very unhappy about
the game at the time, but I now feel it was quite good.

This will be a quick reply, because I've just started my new contract and they
don't like personal email.
>> Hello Doug, I memory of to have read itself in some review that the
>> programmer of the Imagine very were paid, some had the Porsche! it is true?
There were many very cool and expensive cars - Aston Martin Vantage, Ferrari
Boxer, Mondiale (?) and 328 (?), Porsche and Eugene Evans (Wacky Waiters) was
bought a Lotus Esprit when he passed his driving test! Eugene was the youngest
guy in the company, me the second youngest, so we used to go cruising in it!
Mark Butler (one of the main directors) had a racing motorbike.
However, there were many stories about Eugene earning £35000 per year, which
were all made up, and the cars were not purchased, but leased. So there was not
so much money as appeared. Particularly when they went bust! Most of the
programmers and artists were on *very* low wages though. I earned £3500 per
year.

Normally it would be the programmers fault, to be honest. Two games I was
working on were never released. One, because I didn't finish it (Grog's Revenge
- US Gold) and the other because it was no good (P.L.O.D. - Odin). The company
would not have time or money to re-write it, so they would just publish rubbish.
If they did decide to do the job again properly, it would sometimes go wrong
again and they would look stupid (example - StreetHawk !!!)

As far as I can remember, there have been no good movie-based games.
Maybe the movie subject don't give enough inspiration to the game
designers. It leaves too little space for fantasy, I think.
