INTER MILAN FOR BAHRAIN FRIENDLY
By GOPAL NAMBIAR
SOCCER fans in Bahrain are set to get a first-hand taste of top European
action when star-studded Italian Serie A leaders Inter Milan arrive in
Bahrain for a friendly clash at the beginning of next year. This new year
gift is part of a 10-day Bahrain football festival to be held from January 1
to 10.
The Italian friendly is set for January 6, according to the General
Organisation for Youth and Sports (Goys) president Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed
Al Khalifa, who said details of the soccer festival will be revealed later,
at a Press conference at the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) headquarters
in Riffa yesterday.
The Italian outfit's team manager Guido Sussini, BFA president Shaikh Salman
bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Economic Development Board (EDB) chief executive
Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa also addressed the Press conference.
The Italian team, which arrives in the Kingdom on January 2, will be here
for a six-day training camp during the winter break in Europe, said Sussini.
Inter Milan's Marco Materazzi and Fabio Grosso were part of the Italian team
which won the World Cup in Germany earlier this year.
Materazzi was famously head-butted by French captain Zinedine Zidane in the
final and that controversy is still a topic of much debate and discussion.
The Italian team, which will comprise between 40 to 45 members, will include
head coach Roberto Mancini as well as other coaching staff, physical
trainers, doctors, physiotherapists, cooks et al.
"We are very happy to accept the invitation from Bahrain to train in the
kingdom during our winter break," Sussini added.
"This training stint will help us because once we return on January 7 we
will be involved in the Italian Cup quarter-finals which begin on January
10.
"All the players from the first team of Internazionale will be coming to
Bahrain.
"Injured players will not make the trip as they will need the time to rest
and recover from their injuries," he added.
Though Inter have not been able to win the Scudetto for the past 14 years,
they were awarded the 2005-06 Serie A championship because of the match
fixing scandal.
After 10 matches in the present Italian league, Inter Milan are the only
unbeaten team having won seven matches and drawn three. They share the lead
with Palermo on 24 points.
"We chose to invite Inter Milan because a lot of Bahraini soccer fans follow
the Italian league closely," said Shaikh Fawaz.
"We will also be having a beach soccer tournament as well as a women's
soccer tournament during the festival. The other events for the festival are
still in the planning stages," he added.
Bahrain's Economic Development Board also has a role to play in Inter
Milan's visit. "It is part of a larger campaign to promote Bahrain as an
investment destination in Europe," said EDB chief executive Shaikh Mohammed.
Bahrain's national team coach Hans Peter Briegel, who attended the Press
conference, said that this will be a good opportunity to enhance the team's
preparations for the Gulf Cup, which begins in the second half of January.
He was hopeful that the Bahraini professionals playing in other GCC leagues
will be released by their clubs to play in the friendly against Inter.

PARMA - Inter remain on top of the Serie A table with Palermo after a
dramatic 2-1 victory over Parma in Sunday's late game at the Ennio Tardini.
Julio Cruz was Inter's saviour once again, with the Argentine forward
hitting an injury-time winner after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first-half stunner
was cancelled out by an Igor Budan strike.
Fabio Grosso shaved the crossbar with a rising shot after thirteen minutes
of the hard-fought clash. Inter were a goal to the good two minutes later
when Zlatan Ibrahimovic received with his back to goal, turned and crashed a
right-foot shot into the bottom left corner.
The Nerazzurri's lead was shortlived as Parma hit back on 26 minutes through
the impressive Croatian striker Budan, who hooked a Bocchetti assist past
Julio Cesar.
Zlatan Muslimovic wasted an incredible chance to put Parma in front in the
75th minute. With just Julio Cesar to beat the Bosnian forward mis-timed his
shot from Contini's headed pass into the area.
Cruz, on for Crespo in the second half, forced a terrific one-handed save
from Parma substitute De Lucia with a bullet header from Ibrahimovic's cross
before sealing a famous victory in stoppage time, hooking home after his
initial header from Mariano Gonzalez's deflected cross was parried.
Ibrahimovic was dismissed for a second yellow in the fourth minute of added
time and will now miss next Sunday's visit of Reggina.

Cantamessa denies conspiracy 6-Nov-2006
Milan lawyer Leandro Cantamessa cannot explain why certain decisions are
going against the Rossoneri, but he has denied talk of a conspiracy.
The Diavoli were defeated 2-0 by Atalanta on Sunday, dropping 17 points
behind top two Inter and Palermo.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti blasted the referee, blaming the loss mainly on poor
decisions by Tiziano Pieri.
*"We do not like the word conspiracy, but there are three different factors
that are creating growing unease. *
*"There are the referees' decisions, the arbitration discounts and the
agreement with the FIGC, that was then denied,"* said Cantamessa to the
television program Controcampo.
*"First of all, refs are making mistakes that cannot be justified in any way
and cannot be denied,"* he stated, referring to the penalty that was denied
to Milan for a foul on Daniele Bonera.
*"As to CONI's latest verdicts, I don't understand the criteria used to
decide the discounts. *
*"A reduction for everyone was not mandatory, but our position was less
serious than that of the other clubs – we were the only ones where there was
no director general involved.*
*"We had to take part in the Champions League preliminaries, which has
already caused several injuries, seeing as we were forced to review all our
training schedules to prepare.*
*"In the summer, we spoke with Guido Rossi and Paolo Nicoletti of the FIGC
and we reached an agreement that was not formalised but that we trusted. *
*"However, the current Federation refused to honour that agreement.*
*"Adriano Galliani behaved perfectly during these months. We never
threatened to appeal to the TAR civil court and we always showed respect for
the Federation, but they treated us scornfully.*
*"I do not know the reasons behind the factors I mentioned, but I know the
effects. *
*"I don't believe there is a conspiracy, maybe it's a case of conditioning
but not a conspiracy. *
*"And I don't even want to believe the rumours suggesting there was external
pressure on the CONI to convince them not to grant any discount to
Milan,"*concluded Cantamessa.
