A TORINO IL FORUM INTERNAZIONALE PER LA LIBERTÀ DEL TIBET

Nasce il primo sindacato libero dei lavoratori tibetani
Torino - 100 delegati provenienti da Europa, Asia e Nord America sono
convenuti al Centro Congressi "Torino Incontra "per il primo Forum
Internazionale per la libertà del Tibet organizzato dall'ISCOS -Cisl
in collaborazione con la Tibet Culture House e le associazioni
francesi "Tibet Destination Rangzen "e "Alternative Tibetaine".
Al meeting erano presenti anche esponenti di primo piano del dissenso
cinese quali Wei Jingsheng, premio Sakharov del Parlamento Europeo,
per cercare di definire una comune strategia di lotta nonviolenta per
affermare la democrazia in Cina.
Tra gli invitati rappresentanti delle istituzioni piemontesi ,
parlamentari ed esponenti della società civile,ed i consiglieri
Mariacristina Spinosa e Giampiero Leo, coordinatori dell'Associazione
Comuni, Province e Regioni per il Tibet.
Alla Presidenza del Forum sono anche pervenuti i contributi di Harry
Wu ( Laogai Research Foundation ) e di Larry Gerstein (
dell'International Tibet Independence Movement ) impossibilitati a
raggiungere la capitale subalpina.
Laici e religiosi si sono ritrovati a Torino non solo per riaffermare
il diritto all'autodeterminazione del popolo tibetano ma per
progettare nuove ,e più efficaci, forme di coordinamento tra
l'opposizione politica e sociale nei territori occupati.
Nel corso dei lavori , apertisi con una relazione di Claudio
Tecchio , coordinatore della "Campagna di Solidarietà con il Popolo
Tibetano",sono intervenuti tutti gli esponenti più autorevoli della
diaspora tibetana : da Jamyang Norbu , Presidente di Rangzen
Alliance , a Dhundup Namgyal Khorko ,rappresentante delle
associazioni degli ex partigiani del Tibet orientale.
Mario Scotti , Segretario generale della CISL del Piemonte,nel suo
intervento ha sottolineato la necessità di rafforzare il lavoro di
controinformazione per fare in modo che la comunità internazionale si
mobiliti ed ha rilanciato la campagna di raccolta firme per la
Petizione Popolare che chiede al Governo italiano di farsi promotore
di una mozione di condanna della Cina in sede di Consiglio di
Sicurezza delle Nazioni Unite.
Al termine dell'incontro è stato approvato un documento che pone le
basi per la nascita di un network internazionale che sappia rendere
più incisiva l'azione di quanti si battono per l'indipendenza del
Tibet e di tutti i paesi illegalmente occupati dalla Repubblica
Popolare Cinese.
Tra i punti qualificanti l'impegno a dare vita ad un sindacato libero
che possa consentire ai lavoratori e alle lavoratrici del Tibet di
opporsi alle deportazioni in corso e getti le basi per la crescita di
una opposizione sociale capace di opporsi al governo antipopolare
imposto dagli occupanti .
L'evento , organizzato grazie al contributo della Compagnia di San
Paolo e con il patrocinio della regione Piemonte , è stato seguito
con particolare attenzione da media internazionali quali Voice of
America e Radio Free Asia che hanno trasmesso in diretta i momenti
salienti del dibattito.

I have been informed by Toni Brandi about the Forum and workshop on
the Independence of Tibet in Torino, this coming May 26th. . I am
now writing to you to congratulate you for organizing it as I think
that, in the current circumstances and in view of the Olympic Games
2008 in Peking, it is a very worthwhile initiative.
As you quite rightly point out, the CCP gives to the world a false
image about China which is, regretfully, often supported by most of
the western media. There is another face of China which appears to be
somewhat hidden namely the repression of all religions, the forced
abortions and sterilizations, the arrests, the torture, the public
executions, estimated to be some 10 000 per annum, the sale of human
organs for high profits, the exploitation of China's natural
resources for profit which causes damage to the environment and the
deteriorating economic and social conditions of the majority of the
population.
Last but not least, as you know, the horrible system of the LAOGAI is
still fully operational in China, today. As you know millions of
women, men and children are currently forced to work for up to 16
hours per day in over 1 000 LAOGAI, including many religious people
and brave Tibetans whose only crimes are their religious creed and
desire for national freedom.
Infact, the human rights situation in Tibet has been recently
worsening notwithstanding the kind attitude of H.E. the Dalai Lama
and the Tibetan Government in exile towards the CCP. China has not
fulfilled its commitment to the IOC as Tibetans are, today, still
persecuted and arrested for their beliefs.
The Laogai Research Foundation stands fully behind the aspirations
for freedom and social justice of the people of Tibet.
The International Forum for Tibet is a great initiative and I wish
you all a very productive conference from which will no doubt arise a
number of good and concrete initiatives for the cause of freedom in
Tibet and in China,
Please pass on my warmest regards and greetings to all participants
of the International Forum for Tibet.

Dear International Forum Participants,
Tashi Delek! I am very sorry that I cannot be there in person to
participate in this very important and historic "International Forum"
in Turin, Italy focused on securing Tibet's independence. I was very
pleased to hear about this meeting, as there is a great and urgent
need to tighten and strengthen the network of individuals and
organizations working for Rangzen. There is also a pressing need for
all of us to be much more active and openly vocal in our efforts to
achieve independence. For too long, those of us fighting for
independence have worked in isolation, and often times, behind closed
doors in dark rooms!
As most of you know, Taktser Rinpoche and I co-founded the
International Tibet Independence Movement (ITIM) in 1995 to secure
Tibet's independence through nonviolent methods. Therefore, our
mission is consistent with the primary focus of your Forum. As you
also know, Rinpoche has been a strong and firm voice for Rangzen ever
since He escaped from Tibet in 1951. He has been tireless and
relentless His effort to return Tibet to the Tibetans. Even now, at
the age of 84 years old, Rinpoche remains unwavering in His position
that Rangzen is the only viable and acceptable solution to the Tibet-
China conflict.
Since 1995, ITIM also has strongly advocated independence as the only
acceptable solution. We firmly believe Tibetans are the only
individuals who have the best interest of Tibet in mind, and who can
effectively preserve and promote the Tibetan culture and religion. We
also believe Tibetans should never compromise on their birthright of
ruling their own country.
Over the years, ITIM has actively, and at times, aggressively stood
up for Rangzen. Sometimes our organization has stood alone for this
stance, and sometimes we endured harsh criticism and threats from the
Tibetan and non-Tibetan communities. ITIM has always, however, been
guided by principles of justice and truth, and therefore, we have
remained steadfast in our demand for Rangzen. Our demand will never
change.
I know those of you attending this Forum are guided by the same
principles and eventual outcome to the Tibet-China conflict. I am
hopeful your Forum will energize and help to establish a groundswell
of support for the Rangzen movement. I also hope your deliberations
over the course of the next few days will result in more coordinated
and extensive worldwide actions and policies to secure Tibet's
independence.
There are many Rangzen advocates in-exile hiding in the shadows that
will eventually reveal their true aspiration. What is absolutely
clear though is that the Tibetans inside of Tibet openly and
willingly share our unequivocal vision of pursuing Tibet's
independence. I am certain your Forum will inspire the Tibetans in
Tibet, and I hope it will motivate a larger number of persons and
organizations in-exile to stand up in public for Rangzen.
I look forward to hearing about the outcome of your Forum and sharing
the results with Rinpoche and my ITIM Board Members. ITIM is willing
and ready to collaborate on any actions and policies designed to
achieve our shared objective.I am wishing you a successful and
fruitful meeting.
