European Commission Conference on Literary Translation - 20th April 2009
In the context of its policies to promote multilingualism and intercultural
dialogue, the European Commission is organizing a Conference on the role of
literary translation in Brussels on the 20th of April 2009.
Literary translation is a key instrument of understanding and communication
between different languages, and as such it plays an important role not only in
the traditional publishing sector, but also in the visual arts, drama and
cinema. Europe has an established tradition in the field of translation. It is
through translation that ideas have spread through our continent, resulting in
the common cultural heritage that is the foundation of our Union today.
The works will be opened by President Barroso and Commissioner Orban. The
plenary session in the morning will be followed by three workshops in the
afternoon, after which conclusions will be drawn.
We are opening the registration to the conference and inviting professionals and
stakeholders to register directly until the 6th March from our website at:

Colloque international Théorie, pratique et didactique de la traduction
spécialisée
Craiova (Roumanie), 28-29 mai 2009

La faculté des lettres de l'université de Craiova (département de langue et de
littérature françaises) et l'Union latine organisent les 28 et 29 mai 2009, à
Craiova, le Colloque international Théorie, pratique et didactique de la
traduction spécialisée. Les langues officielles du colloque sont le français et
le roumain.

La finalité de ce colloque est de stimuler le dialogue étudiants - formateurs -
traducteurs en vue d'une meilleure insertion sur le marché du travail. Le
colloque sera structuré en trois sections et plusieurs espaces de débat - deux
tables rondes et deux ateliers - où les professionnels issus du domaine de la
traduction spécialisée (enseignants, traducteurs, spécialistes, etc.)
partageront des idées et des expériences sur la théorie et la pratique de la
traduction spécialisée.

Les communications pourront porter sur les thèmes suivants :

• Les théories de la traduction spécialisée
• La typologie des textes/discours spécialisés et stratégies de traduction
• La didactique de la traduction spécialisée
• La formation des traducteurs
• La traduction spécialisée en Roumanie : statut du traducteur spécialisé,
rapport offre/demande sur le marché de la traduction

PUBLIC VISÉ

Le Colloque s'adresse à toute personne intéressée par la traduction spécialisée
au sens large, notamment :

• aux traducteurs et autres professionnels du langage ;
• aux enseignants, chercheurs et étudiants ;
• aux gestionnaires des services de traduction spécialisée.

5ª giornata scientifica Realiter

La Rete panlatina di terminologia - Realiter ( http://realiter.net/) ha il
piacere di annunciarvi che la 5ª Giornata scientifica si svolgerà a Milano
(Italia) il 9 giugno 2009.

Terminologia e plurilinguismo nell'economia internazionale

Prodotti e merci di società nazionali e internazionali si diffondono nel pianeta
attraverso i continenti, e la terminologia plurilingue le segue ovunque. E'
possibile descrivere casi significativi e individuare tipologie d'uso della
terminologia nel campo degli affari internazionali?
Imprese, società, banche e istituti di credito costituiscono veri e propri
archivi di documentazione e depositi di terminologie che si sviluppano seguendo
diversi livelli di trasmissione e di condivisione, così come gradi diversi di
divulgazione.

Per incoraggiare il plurilinguismo nella comunicazione internazionale, sarà
sottolineata l'importanza della terminologia nelle sue pratiche più esemplari,
nell'intento di valutare soluzioni e suggerimenti per quanto riguarda la
promozione della terminologia applicata alla comunicazione specialistica, in
quanto motore principale del rispetto della diversità linguistica.

Il ruolo della terminologia e i trattamenti utilizzati nelle società
internazionali sono al centro dell'interesse di questo incontro di studio: la
Giornata Scientifica di Realiter si propone di discutere modelli di riferimento
ed esempi significativi.

Le persone interessate sono pregate di inviare la loro proposta di comunicazione
entro e non oltre il 31 marzo 2009 all'indirizzo elettronico della Segreteria di
Realiter (realiter@...), con copia a Maria Teresa Zanola
(mariateresa.zanola@...). Non si terrà conto delle comunicazioni inviate
dopo tale data.

Il riassunto, al massimo di 350 parole, dovrà far figurare con chiara evidenza i
seguenti elementi:

- Titolo
- Autore(i)
- Organismo
- Argomento (tematica) e obiettivo(i)

Il Comitato scientifico valuterà le proposte di comunicazione ricevute e
informerà i candidati in questione dell'avvenuta accettazione del loro progetto
di comunicazione. Si ricorda inoltre che Realiter avrà cura di garantire una
giusta distribuzione geolinguistica.

International Terminology Summer School 2009

This is to inform you that the International Terminology Summer School 2009
(TSS2009) will take place from 6-10 July at the Cologne University of Applied
Sciences.

TSS is a practice-oriented one week training course for terminology management.
The course is aimed at language professionals (translators, terminologists,
etc.), students and scientists who look for a comprehensive, state-of-the-art
introduction to terminology theory and practice. Students receive ECTS for
participation.

--- Theme: Paradigms and conceptual systems in knowledge organization

The arrangement of any information content using tools like
bibliographic classification schemes, subject heading systems,
thesauri, taxonomies, and ontologies is collectively studied today
under the broader label of knowledge organization (KO). The
International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) organizes its
biennial international conference to gather scholars and
practitioners across the world who are interested in sharing their
perspectives and experience in this field.

The next international conference will be held in Rome on February
23rd to 26th, 2010, and will have as its theme "Paradigms and
conceptual systems in knowledge organization". Recent research
presented in KO journals and conferences has emphasized how knowledge
organization systems (KOSs) are affected by the social, cultural, and
philosophical contexts in which authors and communities produce and
use them. As a consequence, a critical way of looking at all forms of
KO has spread. Scholars have warned that paradigms hidden in KOSs --
meant as sets of basic assumptions on which knowledge fields are
grounded at a given time and place -- should be identified and
discussed more explicitly.

Systems have to be developed and described with an increased
awareness of their foundations, as well as their still unsolved
questions. Critical awareness does not, in fact, eliminate the
persisting need for KO. The time may be right to move forward from a
critical stage towards a more constructive one, aimed at finding out
which paradigms and conceptual systems can best suit the various
purposes of contemporary KO.

Although many systems have been designed for the purposes of
specific domains and communities, the new situation of interconnected
global knowledge means that often we cannot anticipate which users
will access our knowledge resources. This poses the question of how
to deal with both global and local surroundings and needs, ie with a
diversity of traditions and special viewpoints (eg cultural,
disciplinary or theoretical) within the framework of a global
platform.

Papers are welcome on KO topics including:

- ontological foundations of KO, eg ontological categories, levels
of reality, principles for analyzing classes into their kinds and
parts;

- epistemological foundations of KO, eg psychological, cognitive,
linguistic bases, normative or hermeneutical presuppositions
incorporated in KOSs on what is meant by knowledge;

- pragmatical foundations and requirements of KO, eg viewpoint
warrant, cultural warrant, domain analysis, interoperability between
different perspectives, both global and local;

- solutions for the management of the interdisciplinarity,
transdisciplinarity, and complexity of contemporary knowledge
(as remarked eg in the Leon Manifesto);

- description and analysis of specific KOSs and their conceptual
structures.


--- Instructions for authors

Please provide by May 4th, 2009, a condensed version of your paper,
consisting of 1000 to 1500 words in accurate English, saved as an RTF
or TXT or DOC file. Remove authors' names from the text, using
"Author" and year in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of
authors' name, paper title, etc.

In order to submit it, go to the submission Web page:

and create an account, specifying that you are an Author.

Then go back to the conference homepage
(by clicking on "Paradigms and conceptual systems in KO") and select
"Proposal submission" under the picture or in the menu on the right.
Fill the form and upload your paper according to the instructions.

Papers will be reviewed by the scientific committee as for their
originality and relevance to the conference theme and to knowledge
organization in general. You will be able to follow the revision
process online, and will be notified on acceptance by end of June.

Authors of accepted papers will be requested to submit a final
version of a maximum of 7 pages (~3500 words), which will be
published in the printed proceedings, in the "Advances in KO" series,
by Ergon Verlag.

Failure to conform to the registration and submission deadlines and
to template formats will lead to paper rejection from the proceedings
and the program.

the Sapienza University of Rome.
