9th Portsmouth Translation Conference: The Translator as Writer

CALL FOR PAPERS
Keynote speakers: Neil Bartlett (author, director and translator)
Jody Byrne (author, Technical Translation)

When we think of translation skills we tend to think first of linguistic
expertise, then perhaps of subject expertise (e.g. telecommunications, music,
medicine, law). It is too often forgotten that central to the translator's skill
set is the ability to write. This conference will explore the interfaces between
subject expertise, writing and translation. These might include but are not
limited to:
􀂊 Specialised and technical writing and translation
􀂊 Controlled languages; multilingual document production
􀂊 Translation, advertising and copywriting
􀂊 Creative writing and translation
􀂊 Translation as rewriting
􀂊 Editing and revision
We welcome contributions from scholars, professionals and trainers. Proposals
for practical writing/
translation workshops are also very welcome. Enquiries and/or abstracts of 300
words should be sent to ian.kemble(a)port.ac.uk by 30 June 2009. A selection of
papers from the conference will be published.
This event is supported by the National Network for Translation, an initiative

The World in Crisis – And the Language Industry?

First Announcement and Call for Papers
The financial crisis which broke out in late 2008 has developed into a global
economic crisis affecting world production and services alike. The conference
will analyse how far this crisis has an impact on the language industry,
particularly on translation and related fields including language training,
terminology, language resources and how language professionals can cope with the
new situation.

The conference is organized jointly by the International Association Language
and Business (IALB) and the Swiss Association of Translators, Terminologists and
Interpreters (ASTTI), under the auspices of FIT Europe.

(2) The language of the (economic) crisis
(3) Economic translation today
(4) Economy in turmoil = linguistic turmoil?
(5) Optimisation of language resources

4° Fórum de Partilha Linguística/4th Forum for Linguistic Sharing

Call for Papers

The First, the Second and the Third Forum for Linguistic Sharing, organized by
the Núcleo de Jovens Investigadores (Young Researchers Group), took place at the
FCSH-UNL in July 2006, July 2007 and July 2008. The Young Researchers Group
gathers MA and PhD students and also recent PhDs from the Centro de Linguística
da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL).

For the Quarto Fórum de Partilha Linguística / Fourth Forum for Linguistic
Sharing, CLUNL's Young Researchers Group invite their fellow researchers from
Portuguese and foreign Universities working on languages and/or on a specific
language (Linguistics, Language Sciences, Philosophy of Language, Literature,
Anthropology, Sociology,...), to present the results of their ongoing research.
The Quarto Fórum de Partilha Linguística / Fourth Forum for Linguistic Sharing

papers according to the following calendar and guidelines:

July 15 th 2009 – Announcement of the selected abstracts

GUIDELINES
1. Abstracts are solicited for oral presentations and/or for poster
presentations.
2. The languages of the conference are Portuguese and English.
3. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes, plus 10-minute discussion.
4. All interested researchers should send their abstracts to the Núcleo de
Jovens Investigadores's e-mail: jiclunl@...
5. The abstracts should include the following information:
a) Theme and/or title of the presentation
b) Type of presentation –Oral Presentation / Poster
b) Author's name(s)
c) E-mail address
d) Affiliation
e) Research area(s)
f) Degree
6. The submissions should be anonymous and contain the following:
• Title of the presentation
• Abstract (in Portuguese or English):
- 500 words max and 5 references max
- Times New Roman, 12 pt
- Single line spacing
- Indentation 2,5 cm
- Paragraphs 3 cm spacing before and after.
7. The abstracts should be sent in Word format. The document should be named fpl
(Fórum de Partilha Linguística) followed by the author(s)'s initials (example:
Ana Silva = fplas.doc).
8. All submissions will be evaluated by a reading committee.
9. The selected abstracts will appear in the official program of the 4° Fórum de
Partilha Linguística / 4th Forum for Linguistic Sharing. The participants on the
Second and the Third Forum for Linguistic Sharing were invited to submit their
work for publication in the journal of the CLUNL
(Estudos Linguísticos / Linguistic Studies):

FIERA INTERNAZIONALE DEL LIBRO – TORINO

GLI APPUNTAMENTI SULLA TRADUZIONE

Anche la Fiera 2009 avrà tra i suoi punti di forza gli appuntamenti sulla
traduzione.

Da qualche tempo l'etica sembra collocarsi al centro delle riflessioni sulla
traduzione. Come in ogni lavoro di mediazione, il traduttore è garante fra le
parti, ma come rispettare l'autore del testo di partenza e al tempo stesso il
lettore del testo di arrivo? E uscendo dal testo: quali responsabilità morali ha
il traduttore verso l'editore, verso i propri colleghi e, non ultimo, verso se
stesso? Ne discuteranno Rossella Bernascone, Elena Loewenthal, Monica Randi (Il
Saggiatore) e Giuseppe Strazzeri (Mondadori) nella tavola rotonda L'etica del
traduttore (Sala Professionali, venerdì 15 maggio, ore 15.00).

Scrive Beda il Venerabile: «Il ritmo può sussistere di per sé, senza metro;
mentre il metro non può sussistere senza ritmo. Il metro è un canto costretto da
una certa ragione; il ritmo un canto senza misure razionali». Al grande respiro
del ritmo, che anima anche ogni prosa, è dedicato l'incontro Ritmo e traduzione
con Franco Buffoni, Glauco Felici e Fabio Scotto (Sala Professionali, domenica
17 maggio, ore 12.30).

Come è cambiato e come cambierà il mestiere del traduttore in questa mondo
editoriale sempre più globalizzato? Ce lo racconteranno Katherine Clifton
dell'AITI, Magda Olivetti dell'Istituto Internazionale per la Traduzione
Letteraria, Oliviero Ponte di Pino della Garzanti e Alessandro Trigona
Occhipinti dell'SNS nella tavola rotonda Lo stato dell'arte, coordinata da Diego
Marani della Commissione Cultura - Comunità Europea (Sala Professionali, venerdì
15 maggio, ore 12.00).

L'offerta didattica, nel campo della traduzione editoriale, si fa sempre più
ricca, sia dentro che fuori dall'università, ma è difficile orientarsi. Quali
discipline e quali pratiche sono utili e quali inutili per diventare un
traduttore professionista? Che cosa si può e si deve chiedere a un corso di
traduzione? Paola Mazzarelli del Master Tutto Europa di Torino, Riccardo Duranti
dell'Università La Sapienza di Roma, Lara Fantoni della SETL e Giuliana Schiavi
del Master in traduzione di Vicenza discuteranno di didattica della traduzione
editoriale insieme ad Alessia Ugolotti della Longanesi (Sala Professionali,
giovedì 14 maggio, ore 15.00).

Tornano, infine, i consueti incontri sul laboratorio del traduttore. Che cosa
accade quando il linguaggio verbale si coniuga all'immagine nella traduzione di
fumetti, graphic novel e libri per ragazzi? Ce lo spiegheranno Daniele Brolli,
Fiammetta Giorgi (Mondadori Ragazzi), Gino Scatasta e Isabella Zani (Sala
Professionali, sabato 16 maggio, ore 12.30).

Atelier de traduction thématique pour traductrices et traducteurs professionnels

Du 6 au 8 novembre 2009 à L'arc Romainmôtier (Suisse)

Le rythme de la langue : musicalité, cadence et mètre
Avec Elisabeth Edl et Jean-Pierre Lefebvre

Bien que la question du rythme de la langue se pose particulièrement dans le
domaine de la poésie, les traducteurs/-trices de textes en prose se trouvent
bien souvent eux aussi confrontés à la restitution d'une constellation sonore
particulière. De quels instruments disposent l'allemand et le français pour
faire vibrer la langue ?
Public cible 5 traducteurs/-trices littéraires professionnels avec l'allemand
comme langue cible et 5 traducteurs/-trices littéraires professionnels avec le
français comme langue cible. Le séminaire s'adresse à tous les
traducteurs/-trices qui travaillent sur de la poésie et de la prose rythmée,
quelle que soit la langue à partir de laquelle ils traduisent.
Forme Les participants sont répartis en deux groupes de travail, par langue
cible. Les traducteurs/-trices travaillent sur leurs propres textes ainsi que
sur les textes des autres participants et mènent une réflexion collective sur
les questions de rythme, de sonorité et de métrique. Chaque séance de travail
est animée par un traducteur expérimenté et qualifié. Le séminaire a lieu dans
le cadre exceptionnel de L'arc Romainmôtier (www.l-arc.ch/fr/) et donne
l'occasion aux participants d'échanger des idées non seulement au sein de leur
groupe, mais également entre les deux groupes de langue. En outre, une lecture
bilingue suivie d'une discussion avec un auteur et un traducteur est prévue.
Inscription Les candidats/-es sont priés d'envoyer une biobibliographie
succincte ainsi que 3 traductions de poèmes ou 3 pages de prose poétique
traduite. Chaque poème doit comprendre entre 3 et 30 vers, qu'il s'agisse de
vers libres ou de vers à forme régulière et/ou rimée. Merci de soumettre des
traductions que vous estimez réussies tout comme d'autres encore inabouties.
Animation de l'atelier Elisabeth Edl (traductrice de Philippe Jaccottet,
Stendhal, Julien Green, etc.) et Jean-Pierre Lefebvre (traducteur de Paul Celan,
Rainer Maria Rilke, Heinrich Heine, etc.)
Condition de participation publication d'au moins une traduction chez un éditeur
(non à compte d'auteur)
Frais de participation forfait de € 100,- / CHF 150,- comprenant la
participation à l'atelier, l'hébergement ainsi que les repas
