Hello!
You are perfectly right : there is probably not any "ARNOT" in France, but
there are a lot of "ARNAUD" which could be spelt slightly differently as
"ARNAULD" (both from latin "ARNALDUS"). pronounced like in the English
"cAUse". A slightly different family name (same old origin) is "ARNOUX" or
"ARNOULX" pronounced like the English "fOOt".
This surname was (and is still) very frequent in the south east of France,
in the area were the French Waldesian were located (in the Alps region)
If they were "Huguenots", there are two periods when they could have fled to
Scottland : around 1570-1580, at the time of Mary Stuart (but she was known
as catholic) and around 1680-1700 when some 200,000 protestants fled from
France. But at that time, in their own mind they were no more Waldesian but
identify themselves only as "protestants"

Subject: [genealogia-valdesi] Surname Arnot (Arnaud, Arnone, Arnoldi,
Arneaux)
Hello!
I am trying to research the surname Arnot. My family is descended
from French Huguenots. I think they may be Waldesian. They fled to
Scotland around the 1600's. I don't believe this is the original
spelling of the name. I cannot seem to find anything pertaining to
Arnot in France. Everything comes up under Scottish origin, which is
why I believe the name was changed when they fled to Britain. If
anyone has any information I would love to hear from you. I have
checked many Waldesian and Huguenot sites, but I keep hitting a dead
end!! Unfortunatly I cannot speak French or Italian. Thank you for
your help!!
Rebekah
