Euro parliament backs stem cell research
The European Parliament in Strasbourg has voted in favour of
controversial research using stem cells taken from human embryos. The
vote of 298 for, 214 against, with 21 abstentions, sends a signal to
the EU's central Council of Ministers. Next month, it's due to
decided whether to lift a ban that currently prohibits EU budget
funds from being spent on stem cells. Advocates say such research
could alleviate the diseases Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Objectors
include the Catholic Church. Its Bishops Conference in Germany said
the European Parliament's vote sent a terrible message. Bishops said
it was ethically unacceptable to rate research higher than what they
called an embryo's "right to life". Germany law only allows research
on stem cells predating 2002. German FDP liberals said Strassbourg's
decision represented a "good day" for research.
