We’ve Got Your Back on the Settlement Freeze, Mr. President
![]()
Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak authorized the building of hundreds of new homes in the West Bank settlement of Talmon. This week, he is proposing that those living in the outpost of Migron, be evacuated -- to a new neighborhood outside of a different settlement, Adam.
It could not be any clearer that Prime Minister Netanyahu and his cabinet intend to fight President Obama's settlement policy. Netanyahu, in an effort to detract from the conversation, even went so far as to say: "I think that the more we spend time arguing about this, the more we waste time instead of moving towards peace." In his talks with Secretary of State Clinton, Israeli Foreign Minister Lieberman said bluntly: "We cannot accept this vision absolutely, completely freezing these settlements. "
Fortunately, the Obama Administration has not been deterred in the slightest. In remarks to the press following her meeting with Lieberman, Clinton rightly noted that an end to settlement activity "is an important and essential part of pursuing the efforts leading to a comprehensive peace agreement and the creation of a Palestinian state next to a Israeli-Jewish state that is secure in its borders and future," and in preparation for a meeting between Barak and Special Envoy George Mitchell, the State Department clarified still further: "Both Israel and the Palestinians need to comply with their obligations under the Roadmap. And both sides know exactly what that means," a spokesman said. "For Israel, it means: stop the settlements. ... A freeze on all activity relating to settlements, including natural growth, is what it says in the Roadmap."
We now call on President Obama to stand firm in response to this provocative action taken by the Israeli government.
This is a crucial stage in the development of U.S.-Israeli relations -- it is absolutely vital that the President know: "We've Got Your Back Mr. Obama!"
