What Risk Management Tools for Improved Patient Safety Workshop
This workshop will provide attendees with tools to manage risk and eliminate
error. This follow-up to 2005’s landmark QC for the Future workshop will
focus specifically upon defining current problems in risk management,
reviewing solutions, and describing a systematic risk management approach,
providing attendees with concrete tools with which to return to their
workplaces for practical application. The program will feature practical
training sessions, with available topics including process mapping, Failure
Mode and Effects Analysis [FME(C)A], fault tree analysis, and Hazard
Analysis and Critical Control Points [HACCP].

Learning Objectives
As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Describe current approaches to reduce/eliminate errors and manage risk
in healthcare settings
• Outline the ISO risk management process used by IVD manufacturers
• Explain the benefits of extending the ISO process to laboratories
• List and describe currently available risk management tools, including
process mapping,
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis [FME(C)A], fault tree analysis, and
Hazard Analysis and
Critical Control Points (HACCP)
• Demonstrate two risk management techniques and describe methods for
their implementation
Target Audience
This workshop will be aimed at clinicians, pathologists, laboratorians,
other health professionals, manufacturers and government representatives
interested in implementing a process to identify the hazards associated with
their area of specialty, to estimate and evaluate the resulting risks, to
control these risks, and to monitor the effectiveness of that control in
their home institutions
Continuing Education Information
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the
Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Association
for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the Clinical Laboratory Standards
Institute. The AACC is accredited by the Accreditaiton Council for
Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for
physicians. The AACC designates this educational activity for a maximum of
7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit
commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
This activity is also approved by AACC for a maximum of 7.5 ACCENT© credit
hours towards the AACC Clinical Chemist’s Recognition Award. AACC is an
approved provider of continuing education in the clinical laboratory
sciences by the states of California, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada,
North Dakota, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.
In addition, eligible participants can receive 8.0 PACE® approved contact
hours for continuing education

Committee Meetings
The CLSI Board of Directors and Board of Directors’ Committees will convene
meetings in conjunction with the 2006 Leadership Conference. CLSI area
committees will meet to review the status of current projects, establish
priorities for 2006-2007, and resolve outstanding issues in project
development. In addition, subcommittee sessions will be held for work on
projects in development.
Special Events
Member/Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon: Thursday, 27 April at noon. This
special event will provide an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding and
important contributions of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute
members and volunteers, install our newest directors, and recognize the 2006
award recipients.
President's Reception: The 2006 President's Reception will be hosted by
Thomas L. Hearn, PhD, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute
President-Elect. Don't miss this opportunity to mingle with Tom and other
