The American Proficiency Institute and the Michigan Department of Community
Health conducted a study to evaluate whether a nationwide proficiency testing
program could assess laboratories’ ability to detect Escherichia coli O157:H7,
commonly referred to as E. coli O157:H7. The study found that informing
physicians about stool culture practices is crucial to ensure detection of E.
coli 0157 strains.
