- DIRTY POLITICS DEPARTMENT -
Was Paul Wellstone Murdered? - By Michael I. Niman, AlterNet
Paul Wellstone was the only progressive in the U.S. Senate. Mother
Jones magazine once described him as, "The first 1960s radical
elected to the U.S. senate." He was also the last. Since defeating
incumbent Republican Rudy Boschowitz 12 years ago in a grassroots
upset, Wellstone emerged as the strongest, most persistent, most
articulate and most vocal Senate opponent of the Bush administration.
In a senate that is one heartbeat away from Republican control,
Wellstone was more than just another Democrat. He was often the lone
voice standing firm against the status-quo policies of both the
Democrats and the Republicans. As such, he earned the special ire of
the Bush administration and the Republican Party, who made
Wellstone's defeat that party's number one priority this year.
Various White House figures made numerous recent campaign stops in
Minnesota to stump for the ailing campaign of Wellstone's Republican
opponent, Norm Coleman. Despite being outspent and outgunned,
however, polls show that Wellstone's popularity surged after he voted
to oppose the Senate resolution authorizing George Bush to wage war
in Iraq. He was pulling ahead of Coleman and moving toward a victory
that would both be an embarrassment to the Bush administration and to
Democratic Quislings such as Hillary Clinton who voted to support
"the president."
Then he died.
Wellstone now joins the ranks of other American politicians who died
in small plane crashes. Another recent victim was Missouri's former
Democratic governor, Mel Carnahan, who lost his life in 2000, three
weeks before Election Day, during his Senatorial race against John
Ashcroft. Carnahan went on to become the first dead man to win a
Senatorial race, humiliating and defeating the unpopular Ashcroft
posthumously. Ashcroft, despite his unpopularity, went on to be
appointed Attorney General by George W. Bush. Investigators
determined that Carnahan's plane went down due to "poor visibility."
Carnahan was the second Missouri politician to die in a small plane
crash. The first was Democratic Representative Jerry Litton, whose
plane crashed the night he won the Democratic nomination for senate
in 1976. His Republican opponent ultimately captured the seat from
his successor in November.
While an article in the New York Times on Saturday pointed out the
danger politicians face due to their heavy air travel schedules, the
death of a senator or member of Congress is still relatively rare,
with only one other sitting U.S. Senator, liberal Republican John
Heinz, dying in a plane crash since World War II. Heinz, who entered
office as an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, later emerged as
a strong proponent of health care, social services, public
transportation and the environment. He also urged reconciliation with
Cuba. He died when the landing gear on his small plane failed to
function, and a helicopter dispatched to survey the problem crashed
into his plane.
One former senator, John Tower, also died in a small plane crash.
Tower was best known as the chair of the Tower Commission, which
investigated the Reagan/Bush era Iran/Contra scandal.
Another member of a prominent government commission who died in a
small plane crash was former Democratic representative and House
Majority Leader Hale Boggs. Boggs was best known as one of the seven
members of the Warren Commission, which investigated the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The commission found that
Lee Harvey Oswald was acting alone when he killed the president.
Boggs, it turns out, had "strong doubts" that Oswald acted alone, but
went along with the commission findings. Later, in 1971 and 1972, he
went public with his doubts. He was presumed dead after the small
plane carrying him and Democratic Representative Nicholas Begich
disappeared in 1972.
Texas Democratic Representative Mickey Leland also died in a plane
crash. In his case, the six-term member of Congress and outspoken
advocate of sanctions against the apartheid government of South
Africa, died while traveling in Ethiopia. Another American politician
to die overseas in a plane crash was the Clinton administration's
Commerce Secretary, Ronald Brown, whose plane went down in the
Balkans.
Anyone familiar with my work knows that I'm certainly not a
conspiracy theorist. But to be honest, I know I wasn't alone in my
initial reaction at this week's horrible and tragic news: that being
my surprise that Wellstone had lived this long. Perhaps it's just my
anger and frustration at losing one of the few reputable politicians
in Washington, but I also felt shame. Shame for not writing in my
column, months ago, that I felt that Paul Wellstone's life, more so
than any other politician in Washington, was in danger. I felt that
such speculation was unprofessional and would ultimately undermine my
credibility. In the end, my own self-interest triumphed, and I never
put my concerns into print. Neither did any other mainstream
journalist, though I know of many who shared my concern.
When I heard Wellstone's plane went down, I immediately thought of
Panamanian General Omar Torrijos, who in 1981 thumbed his nose at the
Reagan/Bush administration and threatened to destroy the Panama Canal
in the event of a U.S. invasion. Torrijos died shortly thereafter
when the instruments in his plane failed to function upon takeoff.
Panamanians speculated that the U.S. was involved in the death of the
popular dictator, who was replaced by a U.S. intelligence operative,
Manuel Noreiga, who previously worked with George Bush Senior.
There is no indication today that Wellstone's death was the result
of foul play. What we do know, however, is that Wellstone emerged as
the most visible obstacle standing in the way of a draconian
political agenda by an unelected government. And now he is
conveniently gone. For our government to maintain its credibility at
this time, we need an open and accountable independent investigation
involving international participation into the death of Paul
Wellstone. Hopefully we will find out, beyond any shadow of a doubt,
that this was indeed an untimely accident. For the sake of our
country, we need to know this.

SCI FI Channel Sponsors Excavation At 1947 Roswell Crash Site
Groundbreaking Scientific Investigation To Be Chronicled In SCI FI
Documentary "THE ROSWELL CRASH: STARTLING NEW EVIDENCE" Hosted By
Bryant Gumbel on November 22 As part of SCI FI Channel's recently
announced advocacy initiative to help bring scientific, congressional
and media attention to the UFO phenomenon, the Channel turns to the
tools of modern science to help unravel the decades-old mystery of
the "Roswell Incident."
Utilizing state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies and modern
archeological forensic science under the supervision of the
University of New Mexico, SCI FI announces its coordination and
sponsorship of a landmark scientific excavation of the 1947 crash
site. Working under top secret conditions, skilled archeologists set
out to unearth conclusive physical evidence to help prove or disprove
what some claim is science fiction - the crash of an extraterrestrial
craft.
Considered by many as the "Holy Grail" of all UFO stories, the
"Roswell Incident" has captured the imagination of the public for
years. Did an actual UFO crash outside of Roswell, N.M., in July
1947? Out of those Americans who know of the "Roswell Incident," less
than three in ten (28%) believe the "official" government story of a
weather balloon crash at that site, according to a 2002 national
Roper poll commissioned by SCI FI.
To chronicle this groundbreaking archeological investigation, SCI FI
sent its documentary cameras into the deserts of New Mexico for THE
ROSWELL CRASH: STARTLING NEW EVIDENCE, hosted by Bryant Gumbel (CBS's
The Early Show, NBC's Today Show). Premiering on Friday, November 22
as part of a full night of special programming beginning at 8PM
(ET/PT), this new two-hour SCI FI documentary of the "Roswell
Incident" includes all-new eyewitness interviews and up-to-the minute
late-breaking revelations. From the initial headlines of a "disk"
being recovered in the desert in 1947 to SCI FI's latest "smoking
gun" bombshell, this new examination of the "Roswell Incident" offers
the definitive account of what may be the most important event of the
modern age.
THE ROSWELL CRASH: STARTLING NEW EVIDENCE is directed and executive
produced by Melissa Jo Peltier of MPH Entertainment (My Big Fat Greek
Wedding, The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt). James Romanovich of Platinum
Media, Inc. also serves as executive producer.
In support of THE ROSWELL CRASH: STARTLING NEW EVIDENCE, SCI FI
Channel's award-winning website SCIFI.COM, will offer exclusive
background resources on this historic archeological project, as well
as the "Roswell Incident" itself (users can log on directly through

- WE DID DEPARTMENT -
NASA Hires Writer to Debunk Apollo Theory
Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second person to walk on the moon,
was harassed in Los Angeles last month by a man who claims NASA faked
the six manned lunar landings.
Videographer Bart Sibrel, 37, was four years old when Aldrin walked
on the moon; his own tape of the incident showed him poking Aldrin
with a Bible, demanding that the 72-year-old swear he really walked
on the moon. It also showed Sibrel calling Aldrin a thief, liar and
coward. Aldrin punched him in the face.
The Sept. 9 incident mimicked a broader topic: Sibrel and others had
their theories boosted to a new level of public awareness when the
Fox television network aired its Apollo speculations nationwide two
years ago. Now NASA, with the help of a local author, journalist and
Mission Control veteran, is planning to land a punch of its own.
Dickinson resident James Oberg, a 22-year Mission Control veteran,
is at work on a 30,000-word monograph to be published next fall. The
monograph will not merely try to debunk the theories of those who
claim NASA faked the six manned lunar landings, it will also examine
how such theories take hold, gain popularity and spread.
Oberg, author of 12 space-related books and a regular contributor to
ABC News, said he'd lobbied to do the research for years. The Fox
television program finally pushed Roger Launius, then NASA's chief
historian, to commission the work.
Launius said the conspiracy theories were around for years, but the
Fox program changed things.
"Fox put them in a different category," Launius said.
Launius said his office was besieged by requests for information
after the Fox show aired, most of the contact coming from teachers
who wanted to know how to respond to students who saw the program.
Half the world's population wasn't yet born the last time an
American walked on the moon. Launius said that as more time passes,
the less real the lunar missions seem.
"As time progresses, this gets less and less real to everybody,"
said Launius. "At some level, I think that may be what's happening
here."
Oberg concurred, and added that the conspiracy theories appeal to
"otherwise rational, intelligent people."
"It's not just a few crackpots and their new books and Internet
conspiracy sites," Oberg wrote in 1999. "There are entire subcultures
within the U.S., and substantial cultures around the world, that
strongly believe the landing was faked. I'm told that this is
official dogma still taught in schools in Cuba, plus wherever else
Cuban teachers have been sent (such as Sandanista Nicaragua and
Angola)."
In that same 1999 column, Oberg said the conspiracy theories run
both ways.
"At the other extreme there are also very widespread beliefs that
Apollo accomplished far more than was claimed," wrote Oberg. "Beyond
mere moon rocks, the astronauts are supposed to have brought back
descriptions and photographs of alien vehicles that followed them and
alien structures found on the moon itself."
Oberg will examine claims that lunar photographs and video
transmission from 1969 are full of inconsistencies.
"Finding the basis for people's beliefs is something NASA wants me
to do," said Oberg. "They just can't understand what the appeal is.
The general feeling was that the people who held this view were
unworthy of dialog. I think that was unseemly and improper of NASA.
People who are puzzled by something deserve an attempt at an
explanation."
Oberg said there's an element of "cultural vandalism" in the
theorists' views. Oberg likened the theories to a vandal defacing a
work of art in order to equalize his standing with the artist's. He
said NASA has a responsibility to make information available that
can't be found on theorist Web sites.
Launius said it was important to acknowledge and answer the
questions, but said an examination of how such theories capture
public interest was a significant part of the project.
"I think it's important that we capture the dynamic of this and
offer a response," Launius said.

- STILL A MYSTERY DEPARTMENT -
Nazis and the Mysterious 'Gold Train'
New book tracks tale of lost treasure from the Holocaust
In a cramped, unventilated New York University office, an intense
man tells a story about some looted Nazi gold.
The man is Ronald Zweig, and his scholarly visage and soft accent
belie a tenacity for wading through the archives of the Holocaust. A
senior scholar of modern Judaic studies and member of the National
Archives' Historical Advisory Panel on Holocaust Era Records, he's
also the author of a new book, "The Gold Train" (William Morrow), on
the infamous Hungarian treasure haul.
The Gold Train included everything from silverware and watches to
"wedding rings and gold teeth with human blood on them," Zweig
writes. The material was from hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews
rounded up by the SS and Hungarian fascists in the spring of 1944.
The contents of the train were never recovered in toto. Much of it
was dispersed throughout Europe; some disappeared. Over the years,
Holocaust survivors have sought to get back the belongings that were
placed on the train, to little avail. The train has become a brutal
symbol of all that was lost.
It all came about, says Zweig, because of a horrific confluence of
interests. Jews -- one-fifth of the Hungary's population in 1910 --
had been accepted as part of the country's fabric until the 1930s.
But a government increasingly sympathetic to the Nazis gradually
tightened laws against them, and when World War II turned against
Germany, things got worse.
"What you have here," he says, "are two processes at work. The
German army and foreign office had their own strategic interests in
Hungary. Their concern is that the internal domestic situation be as
quiet as possible.
"The SS has another agenda. On the one hand the ideological mass
murderers who want to finish the Jewish problem say, 'This is our
opportunity.' The 800,000 Jews of Hungary ... had survived until
1944. The Hungarian government had not cooperated with the Germans to
ship them off to Auschwitz, too."
But a new government dominated by Hungarian fascists was "eager,
willing and efficient collaborators in the system," Zweig says. In 12
weeks, 437,000 people were shipped off to Auschwitz, at the rate
sometimes of 12,000 a day.
Precise inventories taken, then Hungarian Jews killed The Nazis, as
usual, were remarkably efficient. The Jews' belongings were minutely
chronicled, Zweig says.
"The crucial period, April 1944, the Jews are handing over their
property; it's put into individual bags and closed in front of them,"
he says. "The address is recorded, and they're given receipts, but
within weeks that all becomes meaningless because these people are
shipped off to Auschwitz and they don't survive."
Afterward, the Hungarians opened the envelopes, put everything into
piles and re-sorted the material into categories. "You couldn't
identify ownership anymore, but the inventory was fairly exact,"
Zweig says.
What Zweig tried to find out with "The Gold Train" was both why and
what: Why Hungary, why so late in the war, and what happened to the
plunder?
The first two answers are political, he observes, the first having
to do with shifting government loyalties toward support for the Nazis
after the country's loss in World War I, the second having to do with
maintaining German survival.
"By 1944, we know that the Germans fully realize they're losing the
war, and everybody is trying to elbow for a better position and
accumulate the assets necessary to negotiate with the Allies, to help
Germany survive until the grand alliance of Stalin, Churchill and
Roosevelt breaks down, or just to flee to Latin America. In Hungary
it becomes very obvious and very ugly," he says.
But as for what happened to the riches of the Gold Train, Zweig
surmises that a clever Hungarian named Árpád Toldi, appointed by the
SS as "commissioner of Jewish affairs," managed to disperse them
through a bait-and-switch.
By December 1944, the Red Army was driving hard on Budapest, and the
decision was made to evacuate the Jewish loot. Toldi supervised the
sorting, packing and departure of a 42-car freight train loaded with
the valuables of 800,000 civilians.
This train meandered its way westward through Hungary into Austria,
with Toldi buying off marauding squads of drunken fascist troops of
various stripes with lesser pieces of loot. The core cache of gold
and diamonds was diverted to a small flotilla of trucks.
"Toldi knows very well what's going to happen at the end, and he
avoids any detailed inventories being made," Zweig recounts with a
smile. "So when the people on the train realize they've been [had],
that Toldi has the real gold and diamonds, they ask themselves,
'Well, who has the inventory?' And they discover that no one has."
The Gold Train wound up in Austria, but its booty was scattered
through various points along its route and probably beyond. With the
train itself passing through first French and then American hands,
and stories of hoards of Nazi loot springing up all over Allied
occupation areas, the Gold Train became lost in the innumerable myths
of Nazi war treasures.
Claims were laid to the surviving assets on the train by the
Soviets, Hungarians and (not incidentally) the two major Jewish
organizations overseeing the welfare of Holocaust survivors in
Europe.
Nobody knows how much the train was worth. The Hungarian government
and Hungarian Jewish organizations estimated $350 million in 1945
dollars, or between $3 billion and $4 billion today.
The bulk of the Gold Train assets in Allied hands was eventually
allocated to the Jewish relief organizations to finance the
evacuation of Hungarian Holocaust survivors to what was then
Palestine. Hungarian Jewish survivors did not receive the money
directly. "In this case, justice has been done but not seen to be
done," Zweig says.
But then there's the money that didn't make it to Allied hands --
the assets in Russian hands or successfully spirited away by Toldi's
accomplices in 1945. That trail has vanished, leaving innumerable
unanswered questions.
Most important, where is the money now?
Zweig answers in one word that describes so much of the tragedy of
the Holocaust: "Gone."

- A STATE OF CREEPINESS DEPARTMENT -
Legendary Beasts Lurk in Arkansas Forests and Waters
Arkansas is full of creepycrawlies. Most haven't been spotted for
many a Halloween, but that's what monsters do: They lurk. Craig
Ogilvie, a travel writer for the Arkansas Department of Parks and
Tourism, tracked old newspaper and other accounts of monster
sightings to log some of the Natural State's most unnatural
residents.
For hundreds of years, people have claimed to see everything from
monster frogs and giant apes to sea serpents in the state's dense
forests, dark rivers and trackless swamps. "I don't really believe in
any of them," Ogilvie says, "but I enjoy reading about them."
His report shows Arkansas has more monsters than you could shake a
stick at - so don't. Never, never shake a stick at one of these:
Monster-size bullfrogs and giant turtles. Readers as far away as
France and India gulped at explorers' accounts of these creatures in
the 1700s.
Ogilvie credits many early tales to the state's scant population.
"Isolated and with virtually no social activities, families
entertained themselves with folk tales they had heard or ones they
fabricated on the spot." Mr. Jones. This old boy - really old - was
said to have vanished into the cavern beneath Cave City after the
Civil War. Chances are, worried parents made up the scary tale to
discourage children from crawling underground to see the river down
there. But if Mr. Jones is still there, still waiting... be careful
in the dark.
The Gowrow. Ozarks travelers feared this 20-foot-long, tusked lizard
that was said to stalk along rocky ledges in the late 1800s. The
story goes, somebody finally killed the scaly beast, but its carcass
was lost en route to the Smithsonian Institution. The Galliwampus.
About the same time as all that Gowrow commotion, it paid to keep a
wary eye out for the Galliwampus, a huge panther, and the Giasticutus
that, Ogilvie records, "walked upright and moved like a large bird."
The White River Monster. Sightings of this sea-serpent-like creature
in the river near Newport go back to 1915. Another spate of monster
reports surfaced in the 1970s. One "Aiii!" witness described the big
dipper as "30 feet long... gray all over, with fins."
In 1973, the Arkansas Legislature declared a section of the White
River a "refuge" for the creature. It might be a cousin to Scotland's
Loch Ness Monster, although a Chicago biologist, Dr. Roy Mackal,
guessed "Whitey" is or was most likely a lost elephant seal. The
Fouke Monster. Six-foot tall, shaggy and stinky, the Fouke Monster
supposedly has been slogging around the Sulphur River's swampy
bottoms since the 1940s.
A 1972 movie, The Legend of Boggy Creek, and its couple of sequels
made the monster famous. And with fame, came size. At his peak of
celebrity 30 years ago, the creature was said to be a 10-foot-tall,
800-pound, extra-odorous monstrosity.
The Heber Springs Water Panther. Nature seemed to go crazy on this
one: Part mountain lion, part Bigfoot, part... fish? No wonder it
screamed in the woods around Greers Ferry Lake. Who wouldn't?
Also, "residents in both Northwest Arkansas and the Pine Bluff area
have reported Bigfoot-type creatures," Ogilvie finds.
The state's monsters have sold their share of souvenir Tshirts over
the years, and might even count as tourist attractions. "The Fouke
Monster and White River Monster both brought news people, at least,
to Arkansas. They brought film crews in to interview the locals,"
Ogilvie says.
Now, the monster-hunters may be gone, but the monsters - or tales
about them, anyway - linger in the shadows. "It's as much part of
Arkansas' folklore as the headless horseman is to New York's,"
Ogilvie says.

- THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT DEPARTMENT -
Masunga Guard Resigns Over Mystery of Night Creatures
Masunga primary school may lose the services of night watchmen who
have vowed never to get nearer the school again because of perpetual
torture by some "mysterious night creatures".
Relating the story during a packed kgotla meeting convened by Kgosi
Christopher Masunga after claims by Ngwato Security Company official
Marks Maposa that his charges had often complained about being
tormented at the school.
Maposa told the audience that his men, who were now refusing to be
posted at the school, said the invisible creatures, which they
suspect to be OEtokolosi', manifested themselves in the form of
little human beings, adding that some times they looked like a snake.
He said he had been receiving reports of persistent tokoloshi
activity at the school from his charges since 1999, adding that such
objects often "whistled, cried like a baby, threw stones on the roof
of classrooms and cut and restored power".
The security chief said recently he had to increase the number of
guards in a bid to reinforce and boost their morale but the problem
had persisted.
One of the guards, Jacob Bogatsu, who was on duty at the time of the
meeting, vowed he would not go back, saying two of his colleagues had
since resigned due to this problem which started in 1992.
North East District principal education officer Violet Segaetsho,
parent-teachers association (PTA) and school authorities confirmed
the security personnel's fears.
Segaetsho said the situation was disturbing because people looked to
security guards for protection yet they were the ones now being
harassed by the so-called forces of darkness.
The residents resolved to engage some spiritual medium such as a
Zion Christian Church (ZCC) pastor and other religious groups to
drive away the evil spirits.
They said the move had worked for places like Mmamashia and
Mathangwane where road accidents used to be the order of the day.
Kgosi Masunga warned that he would banish people who engaged in
witchcraft, expressing fear that teachers might soon start shunning
the school because of sorcery.
