Paranormal investigators look for a 'smoking gun'
Stratford Star
Fred Musante, Editor
June 23, 2005

Nicholas Roesler traveled from his usual haunts in Wisconsin to
Stratford to talk about his favorite subject, those meddling visitors
from another planet that seem obsessed with humanity.
Roesler is the Agent-In-Charge (AIC) of the UFO Investigation Division
of the Smoking Gun Research Agency, which held its 7th annual ParaCon,
or Paranormal Conference, in Stratford last weekend.

He spoke at the public library and the Ramada Inn on Friday and Saturday
with a number of other featured AIC's and guest speakers who hawked
books and collectibles related to aliens, the supernatural, monsters,
and other unexplained phenomena.
"I've see things I can't explain," Roesler said. "That's what got me
interested in the whole subject."
Agent? Is that like Agent Mulder on the "X-Files?" "Something of that
nature, yes," Roesler confirmed. But the television program is fiction.
Roesler deals with actual unidentified flying objects and real life
alien abductions, he said.
Aliens must have a fondness for cheese, also tacos. "Wisconsin has the
highest number of UFO reports in the United States, save a three-county
area in New Mexico," Roesler said.

No, not Roswell, N.M. Do some research and you'll find out that the gray
aliens long ago moved on from Roswell.
Roesler has done a bit of research, himself. "I have a fair degree of
exposure to the whole subject," he said. He also admires anyone else
who's done his homework
Chris Carter, "X-Files" producer, is one of them. The first three or
four seasons of the show relied on documented reports, according to
Roesler.
Another is director Steven Spielberg who hired the late J. Allen Hynek,
the world's leading authority on UFOs at the time, as his technical
advisor for the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

Of course, next Wednesday Spielberg will release his version of "The War
of the Worlds" in which the aliens will behave more like the shark in
"Jaws" than like the cute gnome in "E.T., the Extraterrestrial." This
time the technical advisor will probably be Dale Dye, the military
technical adviser for "Saving Private Ryan" and many other major films.
John Nowinsky, who runs the SGRA out of his home in Westport, said it
started with three people in 1996 and now it has 12 active
investigators, like Roesler, and 300 on its mailing list. "We've been
getting a huge surge in interest in the last couple of years," he said.
Why? Because people are searching for confirmation that they're not
crazy. Nowinsky said people are frequently called "kooks" when they
claim to have encountered aliens or ghosts. "We tell them they're not
the only one who's had that kind of experience," he said.
What are ghosts? The souls of people who died?

Nowinsky said sometimes a ghost is the postmortem imprint of a person on
the spiritual energy of a house or place, but sometimes it's the actual
soul of a dead person. He agreed that the second explanation clashes
with the Christian view that a person's soul is judged after death but
said his concern is documenting the phenomena, not explaining it.
If you happen to have a ghost problem, don't call Bill Murray and Dan
Ackroyd. Call John Zaffis Jr., a well-known paranormal investigator who
has appeared on television and is the nephew of Ed and Lorraine Warren,
who made a career out of it.
Zaffis, a Stratford resident, is bald, bespectacled and goateed, leading
to a moment of confusion when a ghost enthusiast mistook a bald,
bespectacled, goateed reporter for him. His picture in the ParaCon
program wasn't very good.

Stratford is a hotbed of hauntings, almost as much as Wisconsin is with
flying saucers. In fact, Zaffis finds people often mistake ghosts and
demons (yes, demons) for gray aliens. He said it is far rarer that
someone mistakes an alien for a ghost, but it happens.
Four months ago, a "young lady" he didn't identify claimed she was
awakened to find her bed surrounded by grays. Zaffis said he didn't see
anything himself, but determined she had actually encountered demons. He
called in a nondenominational priest from Bridgeport named Larry Edward
to perform an exorcism and got rid of them.
In case you were wondering, demons aren't really as entertaining as in
"The Exorcist." Zaffis said there's no heads spinning around or green
pea soup ejections.

A guy who has seen both sides of the alien/spirit nexus is Rod C. Davis.
He said he saw a UFO near Roosevelt Forest when he was a teenager
growing up in Stratford in the 1960s. Now he lives in Las Vegas,
teaching people how to communicate with the spirit world, like John
Edwards on TV.
Davis, an author like Zaffis and other paranormal and alien
investigators, said encountering space aliens is said to be
communicating with "the outer state," but with spirits it's "the other
side."
He drove out to Archuleta Mesa in New Mexico where UFO experts claim
there is an abandoned gray alien base, hidden by the U.S. government.
Returning to Las Vegas he claimed he experienced an unaccounted-for
absence of time. The obvious explanation would be meddling grays, but
he's convinced it was a psychic experience instead.

There was one E.T. present, and that was Navy Electronics Technician 1st
Class Mark Mihalko, who supervises sonar repairs at the sub base in
Groton. "I was into a little bit of everything," said Mihalko, referring
to the gamut from A to G (aliens to ghosts), but the SGRA has installed
him as its AIC for the Cryptozoology Division.
That's the study of undiscovered or believed to be extinct animals.
Think of Bigfoot, the abominable snowman of the Himalayas, and the Loch
Ness monster.
"I've been told there have been Bigfoot sightings in Connecticut," he
said, not the big fellow himself, but footprints, up in Bristol.

He said he's a freelance writer and would like to make a little money at
this.
"We're all looking for the smoking gun," said Davis, something you can
sink your teeth into that proves that UFOs, ghosts, and monsters are
real.

The truth is out there.

Political candidate thinks the (UFO) force is with her
Associated Press

MEXICO CITY - UFOs are an issue in the race for governor of the State of
Mexico. It's Mexico's most populace state and home to the capital,
Mexico City.

Campaign aides for a candidate, Yeidckol
Polevnsky, say she was by buzzed mysterious rod-like objects, described
as UFOs. The things, whatever they are, can be seen in a video of the
candidate shot at a campaign rally.

One of her aides says the UFOs are good omen for the third-place
candidate. But skeptics aren't ready to say The Force is with the
candidate.

The critics note the mysterious objects could be blurry bugs darting in
front the video camera lens.

The aliens according to gospel?
Religious leaders discuss beings on other planets
By Brad A. Greenberg, Staff Writer

God only knows if there's life on other planets.
"War of the Worlds,' which opens in theaters today, is sure to stir
meta-planetary curiosities among more than just UFO spotters and
"X-Files' fanatics.

Many Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders say the revelation of
extraterrestrial beings would not contradict their theological beliefs.
Rooted in the dogma of Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists is the
existence of aliens.
And one group believes the God of Genesis was a group of space-traveling
scientists.
But is the truth really out there?
"We believe that mankind originated with Adam and Eve. And their habitat
is the Earth. But (Allah) told us there are some other things we don't
know, so there could be other creatures in the universe,' said Mustafa
Kuko, director of the Islamic Center of Riverside.

Scientists have found no evidence of aliens or even microbes outside of
Earth. Mars and Europa, a moon of Saturn, are the two best habitats for
life in our solar system, said Pamela Conrad, an astrobiologist at
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge. The organic
compounds of life have been discovered elsewhere but not "assembled into
anything that looks like life.'
The theological significance of extraterrestrial life has been debated
for centuries. In the Middle Ages, as today, some argued that God could
have created worlds better than ours; others maintained that Earth was
the center of God's universe.
"Although it became heretical to deny that God could create other
worlds, it was dangerous to claim he had,' Joseph L. Spradley, a physics
and astronomy professor at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., wrote in
1998 for a fellowship of Christian scientists.

The verdict from most Christians is still out. However, many theologians
say, if God did create other worlds and other people, that would not
contradict the biblical story of the sin of man being redeemed by the
son of God.
"How God shares the story of creation and of love and of the ultimate
hope for the restoration of all things in God's design, I think that can
be worked out in many different ways,' said Philip A. Amerson, president
of the Claremont School of Theology, a United Methodist seminary.
There could be different paths to God on different planets, Amerson
said. Others accept a more traditional salvation model.
"Saint Paul would suggest to indicate, and it is just a hint, that if
there is life on other planets, and these beings needed salvation or
redemption, the death of Christ on planet Earth would be a sufficient
price,' said the Rev. John Jefferson Davis, a Presbyterian and professor
of theology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary near Boston.

Another possibility is that extraterrestrials would not need atonement,
Seventh-day Adventists believe. Because these beings would not have been
borne of Adam and Eve, they would be perfectly moral beings incapable of
sin.
"The science-fiction version of life on other planets and the Adventist
interpretations would certainly be at odds,' said Calvin Thomsen,
associate pastor at University Church in Loma Linda.
Also at odds with widespread scientific thought would be the belief of a
few thousand Americans that aliens created humans.
The group's founder, a French journalist named Rael, claims he was
visited by an alien in 1973 who said: "We were the ones who designed all
life on Earth.... You mistook us for gods,' according to the movement's
Web site.
Aliens who visit Earth are gentle beings, said Ricky Lee, the leader of
the U.S. Raelian Movement.

"It's not possible that extraterrestrials that can go from one planet to
another are violent or malevolent. If they were, they would have
destroyed themselves before they had the technology to leave their own
planet,' said Lee, a Las Vegas resident.

But who knows what else could be out there.
"It is an infinite universe so there are infinite civilizations,' Lee
said.

Experts to check out Trevor crop circle
6/25/05
By Janine Anderson

TREVOR - From the road it doesn't look like much. Just a field of
ripening wheat stalks, rippling in the breeze.

At the top of a rise partway into the field the even pattern of golden
wheat breaks up a little bit, like there was a patch of seed that didn't
take. The stalks aren't as crowded there, and when the wind moves past
it's not the same even, water-like ripples that move across the rest of
the field.

In that spot, circles of wheat have been bent over, the once upright
stalks now running horizontal in a counterclockwise circle.
Trevor has a crop circle.
Mary Sutherland, a investigator with Burlington UFO and Paranormal,
learned of the circle earlier this week, when a man who lives near the
field sent her an e-mail.
In the e-mail he told Sutherland about the circle, noting that it could
just be that someone drove around in the field, but there are no tracks
leading up to the disturbed area.
Instead, it's like a giant wheel lay flat in the field and spun, pushing
the wheat over gently but firmly, so that it stayed bent but did not
strip the grains from the stalks.

Sutherland went out to investigate after she learned of the circle. She
took photos and soil samples, and she called in the experts. One was
coming in Friday to take aerial photographs, she said. Another group was
due to stop by the field today. They'll likely bring Geiger counters and
audio equipment, and they will compare wheat from within the circle and
without, to try and figure out if the circle is real or if it is a hoax.

Sutherland believes it is real.
"If it was a hoax, they would have made it more visible from the road,"
she said.
This is the second crop circle in Wisconsin she and her husband, Brad,
have investigated. The last one was in Mayville in 2003. The Independent
Crop Circle Researchers Association came out to help with that
one, too.
Jeffrey Wilson is the director of the ICCRA. He drove from Ohio to
Wisconsin Friday night so he could be around to take a look today. Much
of the research he wants to do will try and prove whether someone
mechanically created the circle.

Hoaxes have what he calls "tell-tale signs of damage" to the plants
themselves. They look for that damage, but also compare plants' growth
nodes to see if there are differences between the upright and flattened
stalks.
"If the ones that are flattened have enlarged or elongated (growth
nodes), that is an unhoaxable effect," Wilson said.
He investigated his first crop circle about 10 years ago, after he went
to a site in northern Ohio where he detected radioactivity inside the
crop circle.
"I knew there was something more than people flattening it down with
wood or a rope," he said. "There are some (circles) people are making
that way, but they're not all making them that way."

Wilson and Sutherland believe in sharing the information they gather on
crop circles with the public, which is why Sutherland agreed to show the
Trevor circle off Friday morning.
Sutherland believes the crop circles are some sort of landmark, left by
beings in UFOs. They may be signs that spacecraft landed, flattening the
crops with some kind of electromagnetic energy. She also believes that
the crop circles are a sign that a race of beings that spent time on
Earth thousands of years ago are returning. She connects the crop
circles to Stonehenge, the pyramids and burial mounds.

"Whoever was working with us at that time, they left," Sutherland said.
"People carried on with these symbols. Š I think these are the same
people responsible for the crop circles. They're coming back."

Major New Book on Roswell UFO Published Today
Roswell UFO Controversy Under the Spotlight
Author: Robin Crookshank Hilton
Date: 6/21/2005

"RAAF captures flying saucer on ranch in Roswell region."

Ever since this provocative headline appeared on July 8, 1947,
conspiracy theorists have sincerely believed that the US Government has
maintained an extensive operation of cover-up and denial regarding its
knowledge of alien life. But what if there was a much darker secret
surrounding Roswell – one that had nothing to do with UFOs?

Now, in his new book "Body Snatchers in the Desert: The Horrible Truth
at the Heart of the Roswell Story" and through never-before-revealed
testimony from military whistleblowers, eyewitness intelligence reports,
and an astonishing body of corroborative evidence, Phenomena's Co-Editor
Nick Redfern lays out a controversial new theory on the Roswell mystery:
that the crash-site discovery of prototype military aircraft would
expose a damning secret – a highly confidential, US
Government-sanctioned program to conduct medical experiments on
deformed, disfigured and diseased Japanese people and prisoners of war,
exploited as expendable by their captors.

An important account that forces us to take a closer look at both the
Roswell story and post-war American history, "Body Snatchers in the
Desert" casts a startling new light on the most infamous conspiracy of
all.
Shocking whistle-blower testimony from "Body Snatchers in the Desert":
"Those bodies—the Roswell bodies—they weren't aliens. The government
could care less about stories about alien bodies found at Roswell,
except to hide the truth. Those bodies were Japanese people. I should
have spoken about this years ago. I should have said something."
"The Japanese and the Nazis had done unspeakable things to these people.
Well, it was probably inevitable that someone is going to realize that
there is a huge research value to looking at the way in which people and
bodies have been used…in high-altitude experimentation, pressurization
tests, injecting of plagues and viruses, chemicals, and—later,
here—exposure to radiation."

"Word came down that this was to be a highly-classified project: 'If it
helps us get an edge on the Russians, do what you have to do with these
people, but you keep it classified and you commit nothing to paper.'
They knew, we all knew, that this was going to be damned and dirty.
Everyone had their own pet projects with these people…and the desert
was big enough for everyone to have their slice."

Beginning tomorrow, the first part of an extensive 6-part interview with
Nick Redfern about his book, conducted by Phenomena's News Editor Stuart
Miller, will be posted to the Phenomena website. Subsequent parts of the
interview will follow each day for 6 days in total and will then appear
in a linked version next Monday.

Body Snatchers in the Desert: The Horrible Truth at the Heart of the
Roswell Story by Nick Redfern is published today by Paraview-Pocket, a
division of Simon & Schuster. It is available at Amazon U.S. for $11.20
and at Amazon U.K. for £8.99.

EARTH AND ASTEROID MAY MEET IN 2035
Posted June 22.05
(Original headline: Orbit Close )

Asteroid to miss us in 2029.. but may return
An asteroid big enough to devastate a large city will narrowly miss
Earth in 2029 - but scientists warn it could strike a few years later.

The space rock, which is named 2004 MN4 by astronomers, measures more
than 300 metres across and is approximately 25,600 kilometres from us.

Last December NASA feared it had a 1 in 50 chance of colliding with
Earth before it was given the all-clear.
Now experts have calculated MN4 will achieve the closest near-miss for
more than a millennium when it zooms past on the evening of April 13,
2029 - and the orbiting mass could hit Earth in 2035 or 2036.
These dates score 1 on the Torino scale, where 0 indicates the threat as
harmless and 10 catastrophic.

Brian Marsden of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, raised the alarm when he discovered our planet's
gravitational pull would change the speed of another asteroid.
His observations indicated previous all-clears for potentially deadly
asteroids might need readjustment.

But Dr Bill Bottke of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder,
Colorado, believes the risk posed by MN4 can only be measured once its
"internal structure" is known.

Argentina -
A Contactee's Story
From Scott Corrales
The Journal of Hispanic Ufology
By Raul Oscar Chaves
CIUFOS- La Pampa (Argentina)

(c) 2005 All Rights Reserved
6-17-5

In 1998, Gregorio T.R., 55, married, a resident of Santa Rosa, La Pampa
and a watchman by profession, began to experience recurrent "contact"
experiences with a strange entity. These have continued to take place
through January 2005.

While performing his duties as a watchman at a computer school in Santa
Rosa one evening, he went to the restroom and caught a glimpse of a
strange creature moving behind him as he looked into a mirror. The
entity was silver-colored and stood some 7 feet tall.

This event took place on December 6, 1998.

It should be noted that on two occasions the computers in the teaching
facility were found to have lost their programming the next day, without
the causes ever being established.

On December 28, 1998, a similar experience took place in the same city
but at a service station, where the witness also performed security
duties. On this occasion, the entity was seen standing upright in a
hallway, one hand against the electric circuit breaker panel.

The entity, startled by the onlooker, spun around clumsily and looked at
the witness, who described its gaze as "piercing" and the eyes having a
green color. The witness reported feeling an intense burning sensation
in its eyes for 30 days.

In this instance a mental or telepathic "dialogue" ensued in which the
witness was told, "not to fear, that while he was not the chosen one,
they would nonetheless be in contact with him."

The witness remained ecstatic, mechanically and involuntarily reaching
his hand to his chest and ascertaining that his cardiac rhythm was
normal. At no time did he feel excitement or fear.

On January 23, 1999, while on duty at a gas plant in Santa Rosa,
Gregorio detected the presence of these entities without being able to
detect them physically. On this occasion he was performing his customary
rounds and the time was nearly 0200 hours.

On this occasion, the witness experienced a "missing time" event with an
estimated duration of 3 hours. Upon recovering, he detected moisture on
his trousers, which proved to be seminal fluid; his genitals were
affected, as evidenced by a state of continuous, persistent and painful
erection, showing signs of apparent inflammation. He returned home in a
state of crisis and told his wife and relative that he had "been taken
by aliens" before breaking down into tears.

This state of shock lasted some 15 days during which the erection
persisted, accompanied by intense pain. The witness achieved some degree
of relief by taking extensive sitting baths.

Gregorio believes that semen was extracted from him, although he ignores
the time and the method used.

In November 2001, while working at the computer school and finding
himself in a classroom with work desks, wearing short pants and a
t-shirt, Gregorio fell into a dreamlike state: he thought that the
classroom was completely empty while he felt his body temperature
rising, causing him to break into abundant sweat. This circumstance
prompted him to undress and wring out his clothes, leaving a puddle of
water on the floor after doing so.

Subsequently, he headed for the yard, where he recovered from his fugue
state, ascertaining that his clothes were dry. Faced with this, he
headed back to the classroom in order to see if his experience had been
a dream or not: he found the puddle described earlier.

In December 2002 he performed security duties at the service station and
suddenly became aware of the Entity's presence. This prompted him to go
sit on a box in order to avoid the contact experience. He suffered an
estimated 3-hour time loss at this point, and was unable to recall what
happened.

On January 1, 2003, while on security duty in Santa Rosa and in the
company of his wife, since it was New Year's Day, he saw the same Entity
in the vicinity but no contact took place. He felt the urge to inform
his wife of the experience but chose not to, unable to explain the cause
of his refusal.

The last contact event occurred at 15:00 hours on January 21, 2005.

On this occasion, the witness was acting as an employee/driver for a
distribution company in La Pampa.

He was returning from [the town of] General Acha, located 115 km south
of Santa Rosa, heading for the "Padre Buodo" Rest Area and Shelter on
Provincial Route 152 and from there to Santa Rosa along National Route
35.

At some 110 km from Acha he began to feel restless and nervous, and
decided to open the passenger side window of his vehicle - a Ford 100
pick-up truck - only to discover that the strange entity from his
previous contact experiences was sitting beside him.

Gregorio T.R. recalls that a powerful storm was taking place at the
time, with strong winds and significant loss of visibility. The sky
turned dark and the other vehicles driving along the road were seeking
shelter from the meteorological phenomenon.

Subsequently, the witness reacted and regained awareness, pulling over
his vehicle and getting off. He discovered that he was on Route 35 and
very close to Ataliva Roca, a town some 40 km distant from Santa Rosa.
The estimated time required to cover the aforementioned distance he
calculates in some 20 minutes, a fact that disconcerted him, since his
habitual driving speed is some 60 kmh.

He also verified that he had never made a delivery at the "Padre Buodo"
Rest Area, nor could he remember how he reached Ataliva Roca, being
unable to remember any details of what happened during that leg of the
trip.

It should be noted that during the "telepathic dialogues" he is told not
to share his experiences with anyone at all, nor make them public, and
that the contact events would repeat whenever they were necessary or
required.

Also noteworthy is that the materialization of the Entity occurred first
through the mirror, where the body's details first began to appear and
acquire shape, like a hologram, with the facial features and the body.
He subsequently saw that it had acquired the physiognomy of a human
being.

His family discusses these experiences seldom, depending on the
listener, stating that given the nature of his job, the witness feels no
fear whatsoever and at all times feels protected and looked after.

Gregorio T.R. also states feeling extremely active and vibrant,
especially in sexual matters. He has discovered his ability to
"assimilate electricity" (sic), a capacity hitherto unknown and whose
causes he ignores.
.
Faced with this new experience, he insists on not wanting to offer
greater explanations or details, considering that restating
circumstances as the ones indicated above lead him to believe that he is
faced with a phenomenon that is beyond his control, feeling calm and
resigned about it.

He adds that [the entity] could be a robot or a humanoid, since while
its appearance is human, its attitude and gestures are "mechanical" and
somewhat clumsy, especially when walking.

The witness comes from as state school background and while he offers no
greater details, he is extremely coherent in his statements. In this
researcher's opinion, the experiences described are fully credible.

An Alien Detour
Stopped at night on the side of the road, two Russian truck drivers were
astounded by the sight of a spaceship before them and amazed when one of
the drivers was welcomed aboard.

On the night of 2nd November, 1989 the air temperature dropped very
suddenly to below freezing. Two professional Russian truck drivers, Oleg
Kirzhakov and his companion Nikolai Baranchikov were driving their truck
from near the area of Arkhangelsk to Moscow. They were hurrying home to
finish all the formalities related to their business trip before the
holidays. In the vicinity of Emtza railway station, the road was blocked
by heaps of sand and gravel. The road in front of them was under repair
and Oleg had to turn onto a dirt road to detour. On one bend in the
road, the truck's headlights fell upon a huge structure, which was
standing off to the right of the road.

"I thought it was some kind of construction equipment," said Oleg.
"There were many machines there because the road was under construction.
However, when I drove closer, I saw a big object, that in the headlights
had a metallic sheen to it. When we got to within 80–90 feet of
the object, our motor stalled, and our truck coasted several feet
further and stopped. The headlights that were connected to the back-up
power source were still on. My partner and I couldn't understand what
had happened. The road at this point had a bend in it and trees on the
right side of the road blocked our view of the object. We understood
that we were seeing something very unusual in front of us, and were
afraid that something unavoidable would happen. Hence, I asked Nikolai
to remain in the truck and observe events while I approached the object.
I left the cab and decided to approach the object to examine it more
closely. After I had passed the hood of the truck, I began to feel, with
each step I took, an increased resistance from the air. My body seemed
to melt—it became difficult to move, and I knew that if I got any
closer to the object, I would not be able to move at all."

Oleg turned back toward the truck and tried to approach the object from
another direction. He moved carefully, stopping after each step. He felt
the same, constantly-increasing resistance from the air. He succeeded in
coming to within about 30–36 feet of the object. He stopped on the
shoulder of the road and began to examine it very carefully. Very
quickly, he came to the conclusion that this object was not of Earthly
origin.
Truly, it was something very unusual. In front of Oleg, there stood a
huge disc-shaped object, approximately 120–140 feet in diameter,
with a dome-shaped top, on which no other structures were visible. Along
the perimeter of the disc, there were some dark holes evident, which
Oleg at first thought were portholes. Extending from the lower part of
the object, there were two structures visible, which seemed to support
the ship. The far edge of the disc was slightly elevated, and was
resting on some birch trees, two of which were broken. The object looked
dark and uninhabited and there were no traces visible of windows, doors
or hatches.

A fiery request
Why is this object here, in the middle of the forest, at night? What is
its purpose? Maybe something has gone wrong and it needs assistance? All
these questions flooded Oleg's mind and at that very moment, in front of
him, at a distance of an outstretched hand, right in the air, appeared a
glimmering red, dotted line. This line formed a transparent,
square-shaped screen, 150 mm x 150 mm in size, with rounded corners.
Several words, written in red letters, appeared on the screen. Oleg did
not remember the exact phrase, but the essence of the phrase was a
request for "burning fire".
Oleg continued, "I realised that the screen was illuminated on the body
of the object. I mechanically turned to look back at Nikolai, who was
still sitting in the cab of the truck. Once again, I observed the
screen, but this time it appeared to be in front of the truck.
I attempted to look from one side to the other, but no matter where I
turned my eyes, the screen remained in front of them. The distance to
the screen remained constant and I reached out my hand to try to touch
it. My friend, Nikolai, who was watching these antics from the cab of
the truck, later asked me why I moved my hands.

The screen remained in front of me for the duration of the contact.
However, the inscriptions which appeared on the screen remained only as
long as was necessary for me to understand each one and only then was
the last inscription replaced by a new one."
Only after Oleg understood what was being demanded of him, he carefully
backed away from the object, constantly looking back toward the truck,
and still sensing the same resistance. He returned to the truck and
tried to open the right door of the cab, in order to obtain some kitchen
matches. Despite the combined efforts of both men, they were not able to
open the door for a considerable length of time. Suddenly, the door was
able to be opened quite easily. Oleg removed the box of matches from the
truck's cabin, together with a bottle of laboratory alcohol, which was
used as an anti-freeze in the braking system.
Again asking Nikolai not to leave the truck, Oleg returned to the same
place on the shoulder of the road where he had stood before. However,
this time he was able to move easily and he experienced none of the
resistance he had encountered previously. He gathered some dry leaves
into a pile, poured on some alcohol and ignited them. Upon lifting his
head, he observed that a passage appeared on the surface of the object,
which extended into the interior, forming a corridor. At the distant end
of this corridor, he could see a glimmering, bluish light.

"At first, I had the impression that a shadow was moving inside the
corridor, but then I realised that something was moving in the corridor
toward the opening. When I finally realised what was occurring, I began
stepping backward and fell into the ditch along the side of the road. I
jumped back onto my feet and continued to observe what was happening.
Something approached the opening and I saw that it was a dark "mass,"
which reminded me of a bag or sack. As the "mass" moved, it swayed and
bent from side to side, and its periphery was vague in appearance. At
this moment, a shaft extended from the object, bent and descended to the
surface of the ground. The "mass" slid down the shaft, and while
increasing in size, approached the fire of burning leaves. I was
paralysed by fear! The "mass" stood by the fire for a moment and then
began to return to the object, taking with it the box of matches.
Returning along the same path, the "mass" disappeared in the corridor,
together with the box of matches! Only then did I finally succeed in
extracting myself from the ditch. I returned to the road and glanced
back at my truck again. The truck's headlights blinded me, but I
nevertheless could see the frightened face of Nikolai, which was pressed
forward tightly against the windshield."

an invitation to enter
For a long time, Oleg remained standing on the road, and was unable to
recover his senses. Realising that he was witnessing an event that he
might never again experience, he decided to wait and observe what would
happen next. He had a sudden wish to observe the ship more closely and
immediately an invitation to enter the ship appeared on the screen,
which remained visible in front of him. After a short pause, Oleg
decided to approach the object.
The first thing that caught his attention was several round openings,
approximately 300 mm in diameter, which at first he interpreted to be
portholes. Inside these openings, at a depth of 300–350 mm, a
"grid" of intersecting lines, light grey in colour, was visible. The
central axis of the openings was displaced approximately 30 degrees from
the plane formed by the surface of the object.
Oleg was also able to examine one of the support legs that the object
rested on. The leg consisted of two parts, which were connected at an
articulating joint. The cross-section of each of the two parts of the
leg was in the profile of a three-sided channel beam, with the lower
part being smaller in diameter, such that it could be folded inside the
upper portion. On the bottom of the ship, recessed areas were clearly
visible into which the legs could be retracted. However, because of poor
illumination in the area where the leg was located, Oleg was not able to
examine in detail the actual construction of the leg.

The far side of the object was resting on trees and was slanted toward
Oleg, such that the lower portion of the opening was just above the
level of his head. In order to establish the material that the object
was made of, Oleg wanted to touch it with his hand. A shaft came out of
the portion of the object that was nearest to him. It appeared to be a
round, smooth tube, with a diameter of approximately 50 mm. The tube was
cold and felt metallic. Then, events developed in the following manner:
"I had a desire to look inside, but since the door was above my head, I
decided to grab hold of the tube and jump. The instant I grabbed the
tube, I found myself standing just inside the opening. There was nothing
there in the form of either steps or an elevator. I did not feel any
kind of external influence, but rather everything seemed to happen
naturally, or by itself. I thought of the possibility of danger to me
and decided to be as careful as possible. At that instant, I received a
message on the screen that I had nothing to be afraid of, and that I
could enter. Upon entering the corridor, I looked at the walls and
noticed the absence of doors. The corridor was significantly wider than
the opening, the floor was flat, and the walls and ceiling formed an
oval shape.
"I went along the corridor toward the shimmering light and felt that I
was walking on a flat, metallic floor. Somehow, I got the feeling that
the surrounding walls did not have simply a decorative covering, but
rather they were structural, and something was connected to them from
the back side. There clearly was some sort of strengthening device
attached to them. I did not want to touch the walls, so I am unable to
say exactly what it was that served to strengthen them."

Masses of Lights
Oleg had to proceed along the corridor for approximately 20–25
feet. At the end of the corridor, he saw that it entered into a large
hall with a diameter of approximately 60 feet. On the periphery of the
hall, there were five other entrances, similar in appearance to the one
through which he had just entered. The ceiling in the hall was domed and
it was emitting a soft, diffuse, blue light. Between the other entrances
and along the walls, there were panels of flashing lights. Each panel
appeared to consist of five or six vertical elements. To the left of the
entrance through which Oleg had entered, two walls had no panels. In
place of the panels, there were horizontal recesses in the walls, which
were dark in colour. Also to the left, he observed two dark, vague spots
that looked like bags, which at first were motionless, but then began to
move toward him. The bags were identical to the "mass" which he had seen
near the fire.
Oleg stopped, and stood motionless at the entrance to the hall.

"As soon as I looked around the hall, certain questions came to me,
answers to which appeared immediately on the screen. But then I noticed
that answers appeared in my head before I was able to read them on the
screen. Several answers were accompanied by demonstrations of the
operation of those structures that interested me. In such a manner, my
question of the significance of the dark, horizontal recess in the wall
off to my left was demonstrated to me. The recess was a
three-dimensional information screen, on which I was shown the interior
of another sister ship, with the same moving 'masses' (during the
demonstration, the two 'masses' in our ship were motionless). Then, they
showed a ship in space, among the stars, and at the end of the
demonstration, they showed the presenter of a Soviet television program
called Vremya.

"Off to my right side, there was an oval control panel, or desk, located
about five feet from the wall, on which there were many switches and
lights. All of the illuminated buttons had a flat, square shape. Some of
them were elevated above the level of the control panel, and others were
flush with the top of the panel. On the upper surface of the lamps,
there were some symbols in the form of geometric figures, e.g. circles,
triangles, quadrilateral figures, lines, etc., and combinations of the
above. The black switches on the panel were similar in appearance to
toggle switches. There were no meters or scales on the control panel at
all."
In addition, Oleg described a long, straight divan, which stood next to
the control panel, and a circular crack in the floor, which surrounded
the central part of the hall. The crack gave him reason to believe that
the central part of the floor was able to rotate, allowing the control
panel to be positioned in front of any of the vertical panels situated
along the walls. On the vertical panels, Oleg noticed the same types of
lights that were on the control panel. Many of these lights were
flashing. The entire interior of the hall was white in colour, including
the floor, and only from the ceiling shone soft, blue light. Looking
upward, Oleg tried to locate the source of the light, while
simultaneously asking about the nature of the light. No answer to his
question appeared on the screen. Then, in response to his question, "Who
are you?" and "Where are you from?" the dome in the hall slowly started
to dim, and like in a planetarium, a star map appeared on the ceiling.

While Oleg was trying to find some familiar star system, one of the
stars suddenly began to pulsate and descend slowly. The dark, almost
black starlit sky, combined with the pulsating star suspended over
Oleg's head, as well as with the flashing lights of the control and
vertical panels, emitted enough light to permit him to see all elements
in the entire interior of the spacecraft. In a minute, the pulsating
star slowly rose and the dome reilluminated with the diffuse blue light.
Oleg was unable to carefully study and remember the star map shown to
him. He asked where this pulsating star was located. They answered,
"This is in your galaxy".
"I asked question after question. The answers I received were heard in
my head before I saw them on the screen. I asked, 'What kind of ship am
I on now? What kind of propulsion system do you use to make it fly?' In
response I was told that this spacecraft was a scout ship and used
electromagnetic fields to fly. I was also told that they were studying
our planet, which they need as a springboard to the future.
In response to my question 'Do you have any connection with Bigfoot?',
they said, 'Yes' and added that they watch Bigfoot continuously. As I
was asking question after question, I suddenly noticed that a third
'mass' had appeared in the hall and then a fourth.
I watched a conversation take place between them and came to the
understanding that the time for me to leave had arrived. My next thought
was to leave something with them for a memory. I took off my watch, and
wanted to put it on the floor, but at that moment, I was told that they
had a complete knowledge of the Earth and needed nothing. For the first
time during this visit, they asked me, 'Why do I use a watch made in
another country?'
"Then I asked, 'Is it possible to see you once again?' They said, 'If
you are in danger we will find you within 15 seconds'.

"Backing out a few steps from the hall, I turned and went along the
corridor towards the opening. As I came up to the opening of the
spacecraft, I took hold of the tube by my right hand and I immediately
found myself standing on the ground. Not looking back, I went to the
ditch and crossed over to the road, to the same place where I had stood
a few minutes before. When I looked back, I noticed that the tube and
the opening had disappeared. After a few seconds, I saw the outer rim
begin to move in a clockwise direction. The dome began to move
approximately 30 seconds later in a counterclockwise direction and a
luminescence surrounded the spacecraft. As the revolutions became
faster, the luminescence enveloped the spacecraft and it became a ball
of light."
Oleg noticed that the rotation of all parts of the craft and the
luminescence was happening in absolute silence. At this moment he saw on
the road two more cars with their headlights on. For a few seconds this
distracted his attention from the spacecraft. The sound of the trees
cracking made him turn and look at the spacecraft. The ball of light
slightly shifted position and slowly began to rise. Abruptly
accelerating, the craft shot out of sight towards the north east. His
friend Nikolai got out of the truck and together with the occupants from
the other vehicles, came up to Oleg. They asked him a lot of questions.
Oleg was impressed by the experience but at the same time, was too moved
to speak or fully realise all that had just happened. His hands and legs
were trembling. When he got into his truck, he was unable to use the
accelerator or to shift gears. He had to let his partner drive.
Oleg leaned back on the truck seat and looked at his watch, which he
still had in his hand. From the moment the truck had stopped, 20 minutes
had passed. They still had a day and a half to get to Moscow, their
destination. ∞

Here Come The Foo Fighters
UFOs In World War 2 - The Official StoryAliens or Nazi Weapons?
Dateline: Thursday, June 16, 2005
By: NICK REDFERN: Phenomena Co-Editor

I am often asked if there is any available documented evidence in
Government files that has a bearing on that Second World War-based
precursor to the UFO, the Foo Fighter (the name adopted in the 1990s by
what is without doubt a damned fine band). The answer is certainly: yes.
A distinctly unusual phenomenon, the Foo Fighters were described as
being small balls of light or energy that would "buzz" military aircraft
at the height of battle; but that would never exhibit outright
hostility.

One of the earliest documented examples of just such an encounter can be
found within the now declassified files of the old British Air Ministry.
A formerly Secret document of 11 August 1940 titled "Phenomena Connected
With Enemy Night Tactics" states:
"It is difficult to assess the degree of accuracy of some of the
reports, where enemy aircraft have not attacked, or have not approached
close enough to be identified with certainty, and where the reports have
not been substantiated by more than one member of the crew.
"The strain upon a member of the crew maintaining a vigilant look out
for long periods of time is intense, and, under such conditions, the
stories of 'shadowing are apt to stimulate the very natural tendency to
think that any unidentified shape seen, or imagined in the sky, is an
enemy aircraft. In this connection it is interesting to note that,
except on occasions when fire ensued, only one report of the 92
considered can be definitely confirmed by more than one member of the
crew. It is appreciated that the reason for this is probably the limited
view from crew positions, but it is, nevertheless, not without interest.

"It is quite a well known practice for the Germans to test experimental
apparatus under active service conditions and it appears highly probable
that some of the peculiar incidents reported by pilots have been due to
some new detection device or searchlight installed for experimental
purposes."
The primary concern expressed by Bomber Command was that the more
"peculiar incidents reported by pilots," the things of an "unidentified
shape" and the "unexplained phenomena" were connected with the
activities of the Nazis. However, more was to come that suggested this
theory did not tell the whole story.

On 25 September 1942, a document titled "A Note On Recent Enemy
Pyrotechnic Activity Over Germany" was prepared by the British Air
Ministry's Operational Research Section. It reads:
"Crews have reported encountering various strange pyrotechnic devices
recently over Germany. An investigation covering No.3 and 5 Groups was
undertaken in collaboration with the Flak Liaison Officer of No.5 Group,
in an endeavor to determine the probable purpose of these devices.
M.I.14(e) is also looking into the matter in other Groups and a further
report will be issued later."
The Air Ministry personnel tasked with investigating the puzzle
concluded that there seemed to be at least two different phenomena in
evidence that had collectively become known in official quarters as
"Chandelier Flares." As the Air Ministry explained:
"Phenomenon 1: These objects are undoubtedly shot up from the ground,
either by a rocket with damping to render its trail invisible or by some
form of mortar. It is possible that they are projected by heavy flak
guns but unlikely owing to the size of the resulting object.
"The object first makes its appearance in the sky as an orange red ball
of fire and its arrival is definitely not accompanied by any blast in
its vicinity. It persists as a "ball of fire" about 50 to 60 feet in
diameter for a period of about 5-10 seconds after which period it begins
to "drip" multicolored fragments which fall for about 150 feet before
burning out. This cascade continues for about half a minute or a little
longer, after which the whole thing appears too burn out.
"Most aircraft report that they are shot up to the height at which they
are flying although some crews have seen them both below and above them,
up to 19000 feet. The enemy does not seem to use them in the very early
stages of an attack but waits until it is well developed and then shoots
them up to the height at which the majority of aircraft are flying, and
it is unusual to see more than one in the sky at once. No cases are
known in which an aircraft has been attacked by or has seen an enemy
fighter either immediately before or after seeing one of these firework
displays.

"Aircraft have been very close to them (150-200 yards) when they have
appeared and no ill effects at all were noticed. At a distance they are
reported to look very similar to aircraft falling in flames and it is
thought that they are intended to give crews the impression that a large
number of aircraft are being shot down in flames and that the defenses
are stronger than they really are.
"It is almost certain that these devices are used purely as a deterrent
and not intended to be lethal although, of course, if an aircraft
happened to collide with one it might be lethal. This view is supported
by the fact that the Germans have always placed great value on horrific
devices. However, the deterrent value of such devices is much reduced
and even destroyed once it is realized that they are practically
harmless.

"These objects have been described by some stations as "aerial
minefields", but it is very misleading as it appears that they are
certainly not mines, since (a) no aircraft is known to have sustained
damage from them and (b) it is thought that the whole object of an
aerial mine would be defeated if its position were indicated by such a
luminous object."
As with the vast majority of all the Foo Fighter reports on record,
"Phenomenon 1" did not exhibit any direct hostility. Indeed, in the
words of the Air Ministry, they were "practically harmless." The British
Air Ministry's Operational Research Section then described "Phenomenon
2," the second form of unidentified aerial activity that was being
reported:

"These flares have been seen both over this country and over enemy
territory and it therefore seems probable that they are always dropped
from aircraft. They are a form of multiple flare, usually a minimum of 3
or 4 in number which give out a large amount of light and are probably
designed to assist fighter attack. It is not known whether they are all
fixed together on a cable support by a parachute or whether each flare
drifts down independently after being ejected from some form of
container."
Besides Phenomenon 1 and 2, one other aspect of the mystery puzzled the
Air Ministry greatly:
"There appear to be track indicating flares which may either be on the
ground or be projected up to moderate heights and also small colored
balls which are reported to come up slowly to heights of 6 or 7 thousand
feet. The latter are in all probability light flak tracers. Several
references have recently been made to 'Flashless Flak' and this subject
was also investigated."

Despite the various in-depth investigations undertaken, there seemed a
degree of uncertainty about the nature of the reports, as the military
made clear:
"Phenomenon 1 is probably purely a 'scarecrow' and is not lethal.
Phenomenon 2 is probably a flare to assist enemy fighters. 'Flashless
flak' if it exists exhibits all the normal characteristics of flak
except the brilliance of the flash. None of the above mentioned
phenomena are considered to be in any way connected with aerial mines.
It is suggested that suitable names should be bestowed on 'Phenomena 1
and 2' to facilitate reporting and an attempt to do so will be made in a
[deleted] report shortly to be published jointly by M.I.14(e) and this
section."
While this report suggested that unusual aerial phenomena observed was
strictly the work of the Nazis, in some cases that possibility seemed
highly unlikely, as the following document of 2 December 1942 makes
strikingly apparent. The report, titled "Report by the Crew of 61 Sqdn.
A/c 'J', Captain W/O Lever, of object seen during raid on TURIN, night
of November 28/29th, 1942," was classified Secret. According to the
report:

"The object…was seen by the entire crew of the above aircraft. They
believe it to have been 200-300 feet in length and its width is
estimated at 1/5th or 1/6th of its length. The speed was estimated at
500 m.p.h., and it had four pairs of red lights spaced at equal
distances along its body. These lights did not appear in any way like
exhaust flames; no trace was seen. The object kept a level course. The
crew saw the object twice during the raid, and brief details are given
below: After bombing, time 2240 hours, a/c height 11,000 feet. The
aircraft at this time was some 10/15 miles South-West of Turin traveling
in a north-westerly direction. The object was traveling South-East at
the same height or slightly below the aircraft. After bombing, time 2245
hours, a/c height 14,000 feet. The aircraft was approaching the Alps
when the object was seen again traveling West-South-West up a valley in
the Alps below the level of the peaks. The lights appeared to go out and
the object disappeared from view.

The Captain of the aircraft also reports that he has seen a similar
object about three months ago North of Amsterdam. In this instance it
appeared to be on the ground and later traveling at high speed at a
lower level than the heights given above along the coast for about two
seconds; the lights then went out for the same period of time and came
on again, and the object was still seen to be traveling in the same
direction."
Exactly what this object was remains unknown and declassified
documentation does not support the idea that the case was satisfactorily
resolved. It should be noted, however, that a covering letter signed by
the Air Vice Marshal, Commanding, No.5 Group of the Royal Air Force,
states: "The crew refuses to be shaken in their story in the face of the
usual banter and ridicule."

It is also important to point out that at no time during the Second
World War were the British, the Germans, or the Americans flying
aircraft two-to-three hundred feet in length that were capable of speeds
of five hundred miles per hour.
As this selection of documentation makes very clear, the Foo Fighter of
the Second World War was as much a cause of mystery and concern as was
the Flying Saucer that ingrained itself in the human psyche and in the
minds of the military in 1947.

Bay Area scientists find Earthlike planet 90 trillion miles away
- Keay Davidson, Chronicle Science Writer
Tuesday, June 14, 2005

Bay Area astronomers have found what they call the smallest planet
orbiting another star yet observed.

The object is probably about seven to eight times as massive as Earth
and twice as wide, and it orbits its parent star in two days, they said
at a news conference held Monday by the National Science Foundation in
Arlington, Va.

Like Earth, the planet might consist largely of rocky materials, as
opposed to being a largely gaseous or icy giant planet, although its
exact composition remains uncertain. Most of the previously observed
planets that orbit other stars -- extrasolar planets, as they are called
-- are such "gas giants" and "ice giants."
The planet orbits the star Gliese 876, which is in the direction of the
constellation Aquarius, said the astronomers, led by UC Berkeley
astronomy Professor Geoffrey Marcy. The planet is 2 million miles from
its star. That's so close that the planetary surface could be extremely
hot, probably too hot for life, and any atmosphere probably would have
vaporized into space.

The star is about 15 light-years from Earth. A light-year is the
distance -- about 6 trillion miles -- that a beam of light travels in
one year. Thus, the astronomers observed light from the star that left
it 15 years ago, about the time the Berlin Wall fell.
Marcy's colleagues are astronomers from the Carnegie Institution of
Washington, NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Lick
Observatory at UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State and the National
Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.
The finding has been submitted for publication to a scientific journal,
Astrophysical Journal. It has not yet been formally accepted for
publication, although one peer reviewer for the magazine has received it
positively, the astronomers said.

In recent years, several astronomical teams have reported seeing
possible rocky planets that orbit various stars, and there has been a
quiet competition between American and European teams to claim the next
most exciting discovery. Rocky planets are of special interest because
Earth is a rocky planet, and rocky planets are presumed to be the
likeliest abodes of extraterrestrial life.
In August 2004, for example, a large European team led by astronomer
Nuno C. Santos of Portugal reported spotting a possible rocky body about
14 times as massive as Earth that orbits a yellow-orange "G"-type star.
Our sun is a yellowish G-type star.
By contrast, Gliese 876 is a reddish "M dwarf"-type star.

Marcy said the researchers chose to announce the discovery in advance of
formal acceptance by Astrophysical Journal in order to pre-empt possible
premature leakage of the story.
The scientists knew about the result three years ago, Marcy explained.
About a month ago, in conversation with officials at the National
Science Foundation, "we decided this was so extraordinary, maybe a
milestone in planetary science -- (an extrasolar planet) below 10 Earth
masses -- that it was difficult to imagine keeping the lid (on the
story). We decided ... that it would be better to announce it."

Way out there
The newly discovered planet:
-- Is about 15 light-years, or 90 trillion miles, from Earth.
-- Is less than 2 million miles from its star and circles it every 2
days. Earth, by comparison, is 93 million miles from the sun.
-- Has a surface temperature of 400 to 700 degrees, making prospects for
life unlikely.

UFO Festival lands in July
Associated Press
6/12/05

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - They come in all shapes and sizes, these earthlings
- elaborately costumed or just curious, for a chance to take part in
what's become an annual tradition in southern New Mexico: Roswell's UFO
Festival, planned for July 1-4.

While some wander around in alien costumes and others defend their UFO
research, the festival is generally aimed at providing food,
entertainment and a little education.
It was 1947 when the so-called "Roswell Incident" drew attention to the
desert town. A crash north of Roswell spawned decades of debate, which
still continues: Was it merely a weather balloon, as the government
claimed, or a UFO?

Event coordinator Julie Shuster said the main goal is for people to have
a good time.
"If they learn something about the UFO phenomena or the Roswell Incident
while they're here, then even better," she said.
Visitors can check out the UFO Museum and Research Center or special
festival events, such as a parade, concerts, pony rides for kids - and a
workshop on alien mind-control techniques.

Bizarre objects in the sky over Portland?
6/9/2005

OK, this is pretty weird. My girlfriend and I were sitting outside in
our backyard when I looked up to see this weirdly shaped object tumbling
across the sky. It looked angular, reflective (it was reflecting the
setting sun) and was moving north to south.

We stared at it for a while and then a second object came by, moving
faster. It was also reflective, but shaped (I swear I'm not making this
up) like a donut. They moved like balloons, but certainly looked larger
and more oddly shaped than any balloon I've ever seen. I ran to get my
camera and took a few photos, but by that time they were further away
and I couldn't make out any detail.

Did anyone else see these?

MUFON of Ohio
UFOlogists still keep their eyes on the skies
Thursday, June 9, 2005
By KEVIN PARKS
ThisWeek Staff Writer By David Rea/ThisWeek
William E. Jones is the director of the Mutual UFO Network of Ohio
(MUFON).

The state director of the Mutual UFO Network of Ohio, William E. Jones
of Clintonville, has a theory regarding "unidentified flying objects."
It's a bit whimsical, a little mystical and ultimately unsatisfactory,
so it's probably as good as any other hypothesis, and perhaps a lot
better than some.
Jones calls it "The Frosty Factor."
Frosty was a cat, a white cat with one blue eye and one green eye.
Frosty was also deaf and highly intelligent.
"That cat was super smart," Jones said.
By chance, Jones discovered that Frosty delighted in chasing the beam of
a flashlight around as he played it along the floor.
Loved that game.
"She had a ball," Jones said.

When Jones directed the circle of light up a wall and onto the ceiling,
Frosty would watch it intently in that wide-eyed way cats have. That led
to something of a revelation for the cat owner.
"One day it struck me: that was her UFO," Jones said.
It occurred to Jones that no matter how much Frosty watched him with the
flashlight, no matter how much she studied the subject and even
discussed it with other cats, that even if Frosty found a broken
flashlight and could examine it at her leisure, she simply didn't have
the mental capacity to come up with an explanation for the pool of
light.
She wasn't going to be able to understand what it was.
UFOs, Jones thinks, might be our pool of light.
"Maybe that's what UFOs are, to some degree," he said. "Maybe we'll
never be able to figure this out.
"Now, that doesn't do much for the human ego."
J. Allen Hynek: From 'marsh gas' to 'close encounters'
Kevin Parks

J. Allen Hynek represented the yin and yang of UFO investigation.
On the one hand, the former professor of astronomy at Ohio State
University is quite possibly the first person to have employed the
"swamp gas" explanation for a supposed sighting.
Along with "weather balloons" and "meteor showers," swamp gas has often
been used to dismiss such reports.
At the other extreme, it was Hynek who devised the "Close Encounters of
the First, Second and Third Kind" classification system for human-alien
interaction.
An encounter of the first kind involves observing a UFO within about 200
yards. The second kind details some interaction between the UFO and the
environment.
The occupants of such craft are encountered in "Close Encounters of the
Third Kind," which became the title of a 1977 film directed by Steven
Spielberg.

Hynek served as technical adviser for the movie, although many years
before that he had broken with the scientific establishment when it came
to UFOs.
"Allen was the first scientist to go public on the matter worldwide,"
said John P. Timmerman of Lakeview, Ohio.
Timmerman first became intrigued by unidentified flying objects as a
result of newspaper coverage of the supposed crash of one near Roswell,
N.M., in 1947 while he was an undergraduate at Cornell University. He is
preparing to retire from his many activities with the Center for UFO
Studies, which Hynek founded in 1973.
Josef Allen Hynek was born in Chicago on May 1, 1910, according to
"Who's Who." He attended the University of Chicago where he earned a
bachelor of science degree in 1931 and his Ph.D. four years later.

After working at the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore during World War II, Hynek became a professor of astronomy at
Ohio State University beginning in 1946. During his time in Ohio, Hynek
was director of both the Perkins and McMillin observatories.
In his 1972 book "The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry," Hynek
recalls that his involvement with the phenomenon came about almost by
accident:
"In my association with the UFO phenomenon I was somewhat like the
proverbial 'innocent bystander who got shot.'"
Hynek went on to write that when Project Sign, the precursor to Project
Grudge, which was the precursor to Project Blue Book, the Air Force's
concluding study of UFOs, was launched, he was called upon.

"I was then director of Ohio State University's McMillin Observatory
and, as such, the closest professional astronomer at hand."
According to Hynek's obituary in The New York Times, the Air Force in
1966 asked him to investigate a rash of UFO sightings in Michigan. His
conclusion: "luminous marsh gas, rather than something from space."
Hynek did go on to add, according to the obituary: "Scientists in the
year 2066 may think us very naive in our denials."
From 1952 to 1972, Hynek served as a consultant to the Air Force on
UFOs, according to his obituary in The Chicago Tribune.
Although he made many contributions to the field of astronomy, Hynek
once told a reporter he had no objections to being remembered for his
connection with UFOs.

"I wouldn't mind," he is quoted as saying in The New York Times
obituary. "If I can succeed in making the study of UFOs scientifically
respectable and do something constructive in it, then I think that would
be a real contribution."
Hynek retired in 1978 after 18 years as professor and chairman of the
Department of Astronomy at Northwestern University. His Center for UFO
Studies, which he founded in Evanston, Ill., was briefly relocated to
Scottsdale, Ariz., where he and his wife moved following his retirement.
The center returned to the Chicago area following Hynek's death from a
malignant brain tumor on April 27, 1986.
In the end, it boils down to something very much like faith.
But when it comes to UFOs, it's not the belief in things unseen. Rather,
it is a belief that things are being seen and have been seen for a very
long time.
Some people are convinced, unshakably, that something is out there.

Others regard the UFO faithful as being, well, just plain out there.
Interest seems to wax and wane in the phenomenon known generically as
"unidentified flying objects."
When it comes to the federal government, interest has apparently waned
almost entirely; Project Blue Book, the investigation of what were once
called "flying saucers" that was launched in 1947 and based at
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, was terminated in 1969.
Among the project's conclusions, according to a fact sheet available
over the base Web site:
"There was no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as
'unidentified' (only 701 out of a total of 12,618) were extraterrestrial
vehicles."

When it comes to William E. Jones of Clintonville, interest waxed when
he was a sophomore or junior at West High School, and it hasn't really
waned since.
"It never quite went away," he said.
Jones, 63, is state director of the seven-year-old Mutual UFO Network of
Ohio, a chapter of a nonprofit corporation founded in 1969 and now based
in Morrison, Colo.
MUFON Inc., according to its Web site, is "dedicated, through its
volunteers, to resolving the scientific enigma known collectively as
unidentified flying objects."
Jones is also on the board of directors for the J. Allen Hynek Center
for UFO Studies in Chicago, named for the one-time Ohio State University
astronomy professor who was involved in Project Blue Book. He
subsequently wrote extensively on the subject of unidentified flying
objects (see related story).

If you've seen a UFO or know someone who says they have, Bill Jones
definitely wants to hear from you.
He's even offering anonymity to anyone who wants to get in touch with
him to tell their story.
Bill Jones has not himself seen a UFO.
Nor has Frank Reams, 58, of Westerville, chief investigator for MUFON of
Ohio.
Nor has John P. Timmerman of Lakeview in Logan County who, at 81, is
preparing to step down as treasurer and public relations officer for the
J. Allen Hynek Center to accede to his wife's wishes that they do some
traveling together in their sunset years.
But all three men have spoken extensively with people who claim to have
witnessed UFOs, and they believe not all, but certainly some of their
stories.

Some of them come across as so very sincere.
"That lends a certain credibility to this stuff," Jones said in an
interview. "It gives you a totally different view from what you get just
from books. You start thinking, 'This is real.'"
"I keep my eyes open but, personally, I've never seen anything," said
Reams, who has had plenty of opportunities during his 25-year career as
a corporate pilot, which followed a 10-year stint flying for the Air
Force.
"I've known a lot of people who have and I've talked to lots of people
who have," Reams continued during a telephone interview. "I just say
that there's so much evidence out there and, being involved with it for
so many years, yes, it's out there.
"Now what it is, I don't think anyone knows."
"I've never seen what I can honestly say would have been one of these
very interesting objects or events," Timmerman said by telephone from
his home southeast of Lima.

Timmerman has, however, spoken with what he described as "literally
thousands over the years" who have, including many members of the
military in this and other countries.
"In a way, that convinces me that we are not alone, that I am not alone,
in our curiosity about this, and perhaps we are not alone," said
Timmerman, who was chairman of the CUFOS board of directors from 1980 to
1985.
Their sentiments are echoed by Hynek himself in his 1972 book "The UFO
Experience: A Scientific Inquiry."
In the introduction, Hynek wrote:
"In my years of experience in the investigation of UFO reporters, one
fact stands out: invariably I have had the feeling that I was talking to
someone who was describing a very real event. To him or her it
represented an outstanding experience, vivid and not at all dreamlike,
an event for which the observer was totally unprepared, something soon
recognized as being beyond comprehension."
But those who long for sincere and serious study of UFOs -- people like
Jones and Reams and Timmerman and their counterparts around the country
and around the world -- face something of an uphill battle, and perhaps
always have.

Their desire for scientific facts becomes subsumed with science fiction.
Space operas take precedence over space observation.
And even the people who say they have definitely seen something find
themselves lumped in with the improbably probed and the decidedly
delusional, the allegedly abducted and the arguably addled, the hoaxers
and the hallucinatory, believers in Bigfoot and those who simply will
not let Elvis go.
Still, Bill Jones is mystified that more people do not have a deep and
abiding intellectual curiosity about a phenomenon as sustained and
widespread as UFOs.
"I think a lot of people just ignore it," he said.
Jones, who graduated from West High School in 1960, attended Ohio State
University and then went to Capital University Law School. He is not a
practicing attorney but does legal work for a well-known local employer
Jones would rather not name for, well, obvious reasons. They're the same
reasons he offers anonymity to people willing to get in touch with him
about their experiences.

John Timmerman, for one, wishes fear of ridicule no longer existed.
"I think that the individuals of the world have to open their hearts to
friends and say, 'Listen, this is something that really happened,' " he
said.
Some UFOlogists, as they are called these days, think sightings are of
examples of technology the government, for some reason, wishes to keep
secret.
Many, however, sincerely believe that alien civilizations are paying us
a visit.
"It's a decent theory that explains some of the phenomena, "Jones said.
"The one thing I always say is, 'Be careful what you wish, it might be
true.' "
"I think other planets would seem more logical because it fits in our
three-dimensional world," MUFON of Ohio chief investigator Reams said.
"When you start getting into other dimensions, it all gets pretty
theoretical."

In their 1975 book, "The Edge of Reality: A Progress Report on
Unidentified Flying Objects," co-authors J. Allen Hynek and Jacques
Vallee wrote:
"We start with the incontrovertible fact that reports of Unidentified
Flying Objects exist. Furthermore, such reports continue to be made
daily, in all parts of the world, by all sorts of people, from all walks
of life and all degrees of education, training and culture. The sheer
number of such reports over the past quarter of a century or so is
embarrassingly large, embarrassing because we still do not know what
UFOs are.
"The UFO represents an unknown but real phenomenon. Its implications are
far-reaching and take us to the very edge of what we consider the known
and real physical environment."

On the other side of the coin from Hynek is Philip J. Klass, often
considered the world's foremost UFO skeptic. Klass, who in 1976 helped
found the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the
Paranormal, has written several books debunking famed sightings.
In his 1974 work "UFOs Explained," Klass wrote:
"The idea of wondrous spaceships from a distant civilization really is a
fairy story that is tailored to the adult mentality, a fairy story in
which anyone can become a firsthand participant simply by keeping an
alert eye peeled toward the skies. The myth of extraterrestrial visitors
will persist ... if only because there are so many natural and manmade
'UFOs' to be seen, and because so many people want to believe."

Such sniffing dismissals of so many sightings over so many years in so
many places by people from so many walks of life leave Bill Jones
practically fuming.
"I don't mind skeptics," he said. "I don't like debunkers.
"What is the truth? We don't know."
But Jones thinks the truth is out there.
Anyone who thinks they have some is invited to call him at 442-1598.

More UFOs In The
Arecibo Radio Observatory
By Jorge Martín
Journalist Puerto Rico

E-mail: jmartin@...

Many may not know abou it, but the well-known Arecibo Radio Observatory,
in Puerto Rico, although mainly used for radio-astronomy research, and
allegedly belongs to the University of Cornell, is in fact a project
that belongs to the Department of the Defense of the U.S.A., and has
been used since the 60s to carry out studies on new intercontinental
missile weapons of the Armed Forces of that nation, and in more recent
years in studies of the high Earth atmosphere, specially of the
ionosphere, with the intention to obtain more knowledge on its
characteristics, in order to apply such knowledge in the controversial
Project H.A.A.R.P. The Arecibo Radio Observatory has been used as an
atmospheric heater. On the other hand, although the scientists who
operate the fabulous Arecibo Radio Observatory Arecibo have always
denied that the so called UFO phenomenon exists, or the possibility that
alien beings from other planets of the Cosmos visit us on Earth, the
truth is that they have covertly participated in investigations related
to the UFO subject.

Evidence of this is an official internal memo of the State Civil Defense
Agency of Puerto Rico, known today as the Puerto Rico Emergency
Management Agency. In the memo, with date of October of 1991, its then
director, Colonel José A. M. Nolla, states flatly that personnel from
the Arecibo Radio Observatory was participating in a secret study that
several U.S. military and security agencies, in addition to several
Puerto Rican state government agencies, were making at that moment
pertaining to the heavily strong incidence of UFO / alien related events
of all type that affected the archipelago of Puerto Rico between the
years 1991 and 1992. The memo indicated emphatically that what was
happening in Puerto Rico was real. Such a remark contradicts the
statements of the Arecibo Radio Observatory scientific officers and
technicians in the sense that there is no such thing as the UFO
phenomenon or possible alien based incidents.

Also, as a matter of fact, there have been a series of very significant
events in the zone where the Radio Observatory is located at, events
that indicate that unidentified flying objects, or those those who
control them, watch closely the activities and research being made
there. We have previously published information about sightings of UFOs
and incidents of encounters with their crew, given to us by residents in
the sector where this important scientific center is located at. In this
occasion we present here the declarations given to us recently by two
officers who work in the Radio Observatory facility, while visiting the
center together with an american couple, Mr. Douglas Taylor and his wife
Serena, who live in California.

"They are here"

The first of them, officer Pedro Perez, revealed to us that he had
personally seen a "... very rare flying device" while driving his
personal car on highway #635, leaving the zone of the Radio Observatory
in direction to the town of Lares. "It happened a little more to the
south - he said -, south of the Radio Observatory area, not exactly
above this site. I was with my son, and we both saw it. It was a quite
large object, with a spherical shape, like a huge metallic sphere,
silverplated, with a brightly polished surface. It was suspended up in
the air, in the sky, totally motionless".

He continued explaining: "It did not have any doors or windows, nor any
motor or engine, nothing at all. It just remained there, suspended in
the sky, and at one moment it made a sudden fast movement to the south
and went away, and we lost it from sight". According to Mr. Perez, the
large silver-plated metallic sphere he observed did not emit any sound,
and as already explained, was totally fixed in the sky in a position
close to the Radio Observatory facilities, until the moment for going
away. "The so called OVNIs (UFOs) are real -he added -, we have seen
them here, so I do not have any doubts about that any more. However, we
have to find out where they come from and who are those behind them ",
said the finally the security officer. On the other hand, another one of
the officers, Mr. Jose Vélez, declared to us that he has observed in
several occasions "...some large mysterious spheres of light shining
with a bluish-white tonality, like that of light emmited from electrical
arc welding", which approach the Radio Observatory and suspend
themselves over the area, increasing and diminishing their size.

"For me - Vélez said - that growing and diminishing in size could very
well be an optical effect, probably they are approaching and moving away
and we perceive this as if they were growing in size or getting
smaller". "I have seen those balls of light several times - he added -,
and I have tried to explain to myself what they are, but definitively
they are something non identifiable, and they seem to be under an
intelligent control". Finally, we asked both officials if they had
notified to the officials of the Radio Observatory about their sightings
of such anomalous objects in the area, and they both responded "No".
They also responded to us when we asked them about it, that the
scientific officers or directors of the Arecibo Radio Observatory have
never prohibited them to speak out on the subject, but they also stated
that as a matter of fact the UFO subject is not discussed there at all.
(We have included some attachments with related pictures)

More events

The truth is that there have been many other such events at the site and
in the surrounding area nearby. Here are only some of the reports we
have received from serious and reliable witnesses, but there are many
more:

1. Policemen have witnessed a large luminous cylinder shaped object
suspended in the air at close distance right over the Radio Observatory.

2. Residents in the zone have observed landings of silvery looking
metallic saucer shaped crafts and the emergence from them of both human
type looking and humanoid looking crews, dressed in tightfitting silvery
suits.

3. Witnesses have observed landed saucer-shaped silvery crafts take off
into the sky after having had been in close contact with a human
personnel that departs from the site in a white van type vehicle. The
area where this has happened is a flattened out mound at the edge on
road #10, close to the Radio Observatory facility.

4. Witnesses have observed fully armed U.S. military personnel in
'Hummer' type jeeps chasing brightly lit ovoid objects that fly into Rio
Abajo forest, located right in the background sector of the area in
which the Radio Observatory is located at.

Alien stands on man's lawn
The Journal Times Online
6/4/05

A Caledonia sculptor created the alien that sits in Larry Fredrich's
yard in Kansasville. It's on Highway 11. It was a birthday present from
Fredrich's wife.
Fredrich is a big fan of, well, aliens.
Below is a column on Fredrich and his alien by Journal Times columnist
Mike Moore:
If the aliens come, I'm cruising over to Larry Fredrich's place.

If they're friendly and just want to compare sheet music like in "Close
Encounters," they'll be drawn to the 7-foot-tall wood carving in his
Kansasville yard. If they insist on trashing the place like in
"Independence Day," they might leave the wooden alien alone.
Friendly fire is bad on any planet.
Till then, the only visitors this other-worldly figure attracts are nosy
sightseers and the occasional UFO-happy columnist. Fredrich shared the
story behind the carving last week when I stopped at his place, also
known as Road Apple Ranch, on Durand Avenue (Highway 11).

It was his birthday present, from his wife, Patty, when Fredrich turned
50 last June. A Chinese elm tree about a century old had started to
outgrow its boundaries. The next big gust of wind could've put the thing
in their house.
So they had to cut it, but they left the bottom 14 feet. Fredrich had a
plan for that.
The stump sat waiting for a couple of years while they looked for the
right sculptor. That turned out to be Ron Tepley, the 70-year-old
Caledonia sculptor whose chainsaw also buzzed out the shapes at the
county fairgrounds.

Fredrich came back from a business trip, and it was done. It was big —
"It took me a full day just to haul the scrap," he said — and it was
the alien he wanted.
"I figured we'd end up with a cowboy or an Indian," he said.
That would've been a decent consolation prize. Fredrich has an interest
in the old days, as a quick tour of his vintage carriage house proved.
He let me play with a wad of fossilized dinosaur dung and talked proudly
of rarities like a saddle from a cow. That was before those animals
convinced us they were tasty enough to get out of manual labor.

He might be seen as an equal-opportunity eccentric, but Fredrich is
especially fascinated with extraterrestrials. Not near the point of
shaping his mashed potatoes into Devils Tower, just in collectibles. A
license plate marked "Alien" hanging in his garage is just the
beginning.
A Roswell (New Mexico) sign marks his driveway. He hinted that it's real
but wouldn't explain any further. Then he told me, as a consultant to
the federal government, he's got a secret security clearance with an
intelligence agency.
I had to ask: Any UFO cover-ups he could let us in on?

No, he said, he's never seen alien autopsy photos or any of that. (He
seems trustworthy, but I know they never told Agent Mulder the big
stuff, either). The source of Fredrich's interest is more cerebral.
"I'm a true believer that Americans and humans are very naive if we
believe we are the only intelligent life," he said.
Fredrich pointed out there had been enough wood for Tepley to carve out
a small spaceship next to the figure. A high-minded creature taking off
on an interstellar flight in a spaceship only a fraction of its size?
Doesn't say much for intelligence, but it does explain why the alien
looks so stiff.

At night, a green floodlight adds to his aura (not fluent in ET anatomy,
I'll take a gender guess). Last summer, with the neighboring cornstalks
at full height, he really got drivers' attention.
"It looked like the alien was walking across the top of the cornfield,"
Fredrich said.

Nope, just wood. Unlike when Orson Welles freaked out radio audiences
with the original "War of the Worlds," you can approach this one calmly.
With one caveat: If it suddenly sprouts a wooden laser gun, you're free
to panic.

Foo Fighters Rock Roswell
Jun 02, 2005

This is one of those things that probably should have happened a lot
earlier: The Foo Fighters are playing in a hangar in the fabled Roswell,
N.M.

The band will play a private show in Roswell's Walker Air Force base,
the location, if you listen to X-files enthusiasts and UFO nuts, where
an extraterrestrial craft was stored after its 1947 crash in the desert.
The band is set to play in the same hangar that's said to house the
wreckage of the craft.

Dave Grohl's an admitted UFO fanatic. His band takes its name from air

The Center for the Study of Life in the Universe

We live in an awesome universe, rich in remarkable, complex, phenomena.
Every advance in our observing capabilities reveals new and often
unpredicted objects, such as other planetary systems, and processes in
the universe. Of all these phenomena, the most marvelous, and at the
same time of the greatest interest to us as human beings, is life in the
universe. How many planets exist which might support life? Indeed, what
is required for life to exist? How does life start? How does it evolve,
and what fabulous creatures can evolution produce? How often do
intelligent creatures appear in the giant tapestry of life? It is
exactly these questions, and all of them, which are being addressed by
the scientists of the Center for the Study of Life in the Universe,
LITU.

To make progress towards answers, some scientists in the Center are
searching for other planetary systems by relentlessly watching for the
slight dimming of starlight which occurs if a planet crosses in front of
the star as seen from Earth. We even utilize an automated telescope for
this program in the very harsh winter of Antarctica, where almost six
months of continual darkness provides ideal observing conditions. In the
near future our scientists will participate in the Kepler spacecraft
mission, which utilizes a special telescope that will look for the
characteristic dimming caused by planetary eclipses. For the first time,
there will be adequate sensitivity to detect planets like the Earth.
This telescope will continually watch a hundred thousand of stars,
always alert for the tiny changes in brightness which would signal the
presence of other Earths.
Our scientists are working to understand how planets change over
billions of years, and especially how their atmospheres change in their
chemistry, temperature, and pressure with time. Especially – will
atmospheres suitable for life be common and enduring?
And where conditions are right, will there be life? LITU scientists have
been leading innovators in suggesting new scenarios, which might have
led to the origin of life on Earth and elsewhere. Did it happen in
Darwin's "warm little pond", or at the steaming undersea cauldrons of
the ocean, spewing forth hot water, rich in suitable chemicals? Or did
it, perhaps, develop in an exotic place, such as within the rocks of the
Earth, a new suggestion made by one of our scientists.

Not long ago we believed that only Sun-like stars would provide the
right conditions for life on their planets. Around these bright stars,
planets can orbit at a distance where temperatures are comfortable. But
little did we know: great surprises were in store. The enormous power of
the greenhouse effect to warm planets far from their stars was not
recognized until we discovered that the effect was so important on Venus
that the planet's surface is hot enough to melt lead. We see a sort of
greenhouse, actually made by a many-mile layer of ice, on the satellite
Europa of Jupiter, so far from the Sun that the brightness of sunlight
is only a few percent of that on Earth. But there is liquid water there,
and a lot of it – much more than in all the oceans of Earth combined.
Could there be life in this giant ocean? Our scientists are exploring
this possibility, both in theory and in the planning of missions to
Europa to search for signs of life.

The planets of dim red dwarf stars, also called M stars, are a new and
exciting possibility. Long neglected as targets for SETI searches, they
comprise eighty percent of the stars in our galaxy. Yet their starlight
is so faint that only planets in close orbits would be warmed. But what
warming this would be! In orbits so small, planets would be tidally
locked, with the same side continually facing the star, like the near
side of our Moon always faces Earth. The center of the sunny side of the
planet could be scorching. The dark side would be a frozen wasteland.
But, somewhere between these extreme environments, conditions might be
just right for life. Perhaps on these planets there is a "Camelot" zone,
just right for life, which makes planets like ours seem like the slums
of the Galaxy in comparison. What might life be like in a place where
the weather hardly changes, and the "sun" never sets?

Perhaps most provocative of all are a class of planets which must exist,
but which we have never seen. These are the planets which have been
ejected from their systems during the turmoil which accompanies the
birth of a planetary system. These "rogues" are destined to wander
through space alone, cosmic nomads, with only the light of distant stars
falling on them. Shouldn't life be impossible there? Maybe not. Just as
the outer giant planets of our system are warm in their interiors due to
radioactive decay and other sources of energy, so the rogues could well
have a deep enough atmosphere, and greenhouse effect, that they can
provide a long-lived habitat for life. How strange that life must be, if
it exists!
Once life begins, it is opportunistic, and will proliferate in habitats
we can barely imagine.

Even here on Earth, we find life surviving near nuclear reactors, bathed
by radiation we once thought no life could bear. Life survives—and
even thrives—in such extreme environments as the acid hot springs of
Yellowstone National Park, the depths of the polar oceans, the
desiccated valleys of Antarctica, and the high altitude lakes of
Licancabur volcano on the border of Chile and Bolivia. We know this at
the Institute because our scientists have been to the summit of
Licancabur, even in the summit lake, and will be again. SETI Institute
scientists study "extremophiles", the life existing in extreme
environments, to explore the possible limits of life on other worlds.

As we search for signs of life on Mars, we will continue to follow the
water. But what else is required for life? How was the earliest
oxygen—so essential to large-brained creatures like
ourselves—generated on terrestrial planets? Might early Mars have
harbored enough nitrogen to foster life? In the laboratory, we can
recreate exotic environments, otherwise far removed from us in time or
space. In Chile's parched Atacama Desert, and other locations around the
Earth, we find analogues to early Mars. Our scientists are addressing
these questions. Using new instrumentation, we will burrow below the
surface of Mars. We also monitored the hazy atmosphere of Titan during
the descent of the Huygens probe.

Given primitive life in many places, what then? SETI Institute
scientists are exploring the developments that led to the existence of
intelligent creatures on Earth, in hopes of determining how often high
intelligence should appear, and perhaps technology as well. Are these
rare, and we are almost freaks, or, given enough time, is intelligence
and high technology inevitable on planets even somewhat like the Earth?
The answers to these questions are some of the most important, yet least
known in all of astrobiology. SETI Institute scientists are among the
most active in trying to find the truth. The answers are of profound
importance to science, but also in a practical way, since they give us
guidance in planning our SETI searches.

In our Life in the Universe Center, the Institute is conducting perhaps
the broadest program of any institution addressing the origins and
nature of life in the universe. In so doing, we hope to contribute to
the understanding of some of the oldest and most profound questions of
science and philosophy.

altered by the marriage adjudging it to it and changing some letters by the
generous investigation. The certain thing is that the idea once again leaves in
Puerto Rico in the casuistic ufos to world-wide level and although I have
remained single of endorsement of colleagues of my coast always I make formal
appearance in remembering that day. In this island the sightings ufos continue
taking place and but in they even and declared: "EXTRATERRESTRIAL ROUTE PR 303"

Flying saucer group looks to the skies
EXTRATERRESTRIALS
By Lindsay Sonsky, Special to East Memphis Appeal
June 2, 2005

At age 7, Mark Gilley had an experience that would change the way he
looked at the sky forever.

In the backyard of his home in Central Gardens, it was spring and
nearing dusk when his aunt called to him.
"She said 'Come here and see if you see what I see,' " recalled Gilley.
He remembers spotting an illuminated object like a teardrop moving
across the sky. He watched until it disappeared behind a cluster of
trees.

At 58, Gilley is employed Downtown at the Clovernook Center for the
Blind on St. Paul Avenue, where he helps those who have lost their
vision become independent.
He still believes it was a UFO he saw that day. He's not alone.
As a longtime member of the Memphis UFO Discussion Group, which meets at
the Poplar-White Station Branch Library at 5094 Poplar on the second
Wednesday of each month, Gilley is in agreeable company with many others
who believe Earth is being visited by extraterrestrials.
Attracting up to 30 people to meetings, the Memphis group has been
together for nearly 25 years.

Gilley is also the state director of Western Tennessee for the Mutual
UFO Network (MUFON), a 3,000-member international organization that
investigates sightings.
Manning the region hotline (the phone number dials his cell phone), the
East Memphian anticipates calls that send him and Marcia Prince out of
town for closer inspections.
Prince, also an East Memphian, is assistant state director of Western
Tennessee and chairman of the Memphis UFO Discussion Group.

But that doesn't happen very often.
Most are hesitant to admit they might have spotted something unearthly,
said Prince. "I call it the 'giggle factor.' You say 'UFO' and people
giggle," she said.
But as ridiculous as some may think it is, every year tens of thousands
of people claim to spot UFOs, she said.
The folks who are certified by the state group to look into such cases
are called field investigators.

Gilley and Prince are investigative trainees, who will soon be taking
the official MUFON examination, which will cover 35 scientific fields.
Instructed by certified investigators, they learn how to take steps such
as conducting interviews and collecting soil samples.
Their first assignment sent them to North Mississippi, where a resident
captured a photograph of a sphere in the sky.
"It looked like a worm hole," said Prince, who sent it on to a MUFON
specialist who ended up discrediting it as a product of the way the film
was developed.
Other sightings have sent them investigating occurrences all over
Memphis and in areas such as Berclair, Bartlett, Whitehaven and Shelby
Farms.

The trainees are investigating a rural town outside Memphis, which they
wouldn't disclose, but which has had several accounts of UFOs and cases
of dead cattle.
Like Gilley and Prince, many "Ufologists" don't believe that the
government or mainstream media are revealing everything or reporting
fairly about extraterrestrial encounters. That leaves believers scouting
out information from publications such as MUFON's monthly journal and
books and local radio shows.

A big part of the Memphis UFO Discussion Group is keeping members
updated on sightings, studies and investigations. They do this by
handing out articles and hosting guest speakers from scientists to
abductees. The Memphis UFO Discussion Group had booth at the MidSouth
Con (the annual Science, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and Gaming
convention) hoping to reach a range of open-minded folks.

"We believe this is the truth and we want to prove that it's out there,"
Prince said.

To report a UFO or extraterrestrial encounter, contact Gilley at
484-2972.
