If English-speaking scholars, students or the general public from
the United States wanted to learn more about the important
archaeological interventions, Exhibits (or new plans for the Via dei
Fori Imperial (C. Aymonino & M. Fuksas c. 2004) or other scholarly
research pertaining to the Imperial Fora of Rome from 1998 until the
present, what resources are currently available in English-language
publications? (i.e. Newspapers, archaeological magazines or
scholarly journals).
After spending a little more then five years (c. mid-1999)
collecting a host of Italian and International media, professional
archaeological (i.e. French & German) & independent resources (i.e.)
French and German, and then finally comparing that with what has
been made available specifically for the English reader...I can
sadly and disappointingly say that the important archaeological
interventions and related studies pertaining to the work in the
Imperial Fora has been given the least amount of attention by
English-speaking scholars and the media (with the exception of Prof.
James E. Packer's work & publication on the Forum of Trajan in 1997,
2001, & 2003) then any of the past archaeological interventions in
the historic Roman Forum & Imperial Fora of Rome since the early
20th Century by R. Lanciani, G. Boni & C. Ricci; the controversial
Fascist clearing of the Imperial Fora in the 1930s; and the
important work initiated by Prof. G.C. Argan & Prof. La Regina in
the early 1980s, etc.
The question now is why the more then evident lack of attention by
English speaking scholars & the media in general? And how are future
University students going to develop an interest in Rome and
archaeology (Antiquity, Christian, Medieval & Urban) and other
related disciplines if contemporary scholars / teachers have to
relay on general publications (LTUR 1999 & 2000, A. Claridge 1998,
L. Richardson, jr. 1993, etc, etc.) That are currently either out-
dated & or lack in significant details of the fundamental
information needed to convey the importance of these significant
archaeological studies in the Imperial Fora & elsewhere in Rome:
satellite & aerial images of the historic center of Rome,
topographical maps & diagrams conveys all the archeological /
historical periods, etc; color images of the area (in various
categories ranging from multi-dimensional panoramic views of the
Roman & Imperial Fora, elevated views of each individual for a,
interior views and photographs of the recently discovered evidence,
etc.)… Biographies and photographs of important Italian &
International archaeologists and scholars dating from the early
studies of the Imperial Fora area to the present…. this list
could
go on and on!
I would really appreciate your opinions, comments and remarks on
this topic…!
Thank you
