Dear Members

Several months ago the English language Art & Archaeology Magazine MINERVA
(London, UK) published the following article:
Richard Hodges, Resurrecting Ruins: The Art of Archaeological Reconstruction.
Vol. 17, No. 3. May / June 2006. =
http://minervamagazine.com/issue1703/index.html
The article discussed the work of the Italian artists affiliated with the
Italian firm of INKLINK of Florence, Italy.
http://www.inklink.it/inklink/archivio.php?toc=144#
This firm is particularly noted for creation of numerous highly detailed three
dimensional educational / informational panels now located throughout the
Crypta Balbi Museum of Medieval Archaeology of Rome.
On exhibit at the Crypta Balbi Museum is an informational panel entitled:
“I Fori [Imperiali] nell’ alto medievo – La Vita nei Fori / the [Imperial]
Fora in the early Middle Ages.” =
http://it.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/romaeterna/photos/view/9a34?b=2&m=f&o=0
Photo = personal collection of Martin G. Conde, c. 2004.
The actual image of the three dimensional reconstruction of the “I Fori
[Imperiali]” was originally available online on the Internet site of Inklink c.
2002 [no longer available]. =
http://it.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/romaeterna/photos/view/9a34?b=3&m=f&o=0
The image of the Fori Imperiali well has also been published in several
recently published works by the Italian archaeologists R. Meneghini (Forum of
Trajan) and R. S. Valenzani (Forum of Caesar & Forum / Temple of Peace) who have
been responsible for the archaeological excavation in these sectors of the Fora
since the late 1990s until the present. =
R. M / R. S. V – Roma Nell’ Altomedievo (Roma 2004) = p. 187 / fig. 178:
Veduta ricostruttiva dei Fori Imperiali nel X secolo (da Roma 2001).
M. S. Arena (edt.), Roma dall’antichità al medioevo: archeologia e storia nel
Museo Nazionale Romano, Crypta Balbi. Vol. 1 (Roma 2001) = p. 39 / fig. 7:
Veduta del complesso dei Fori Imperiali nel X sccolo (designo Inklink).
Note: A modified version of this image which only showed the Forum and Markets
of Trajan was also originally on display at the first Visitor Center of the
Imperial Fora c. 2001 (personal communication and image courtesy of Prof. James
E. Packer, Northwestern University, Ill. USA.
Sept. 2001).
For this image see: H. Cancik / H. Schneider (edt.) – Rom: § III. Kaiserfora.
Der Neue Pauly (Pac –Sch) 15.2 (2002: 892-904) = section: 857-859 / [fig.] abb.
8: Mutmasslicher Zustand des Trajansforums in 10. Jahrhundert.
In the latest article by R. Hodges, MINERVA (MAY/JUNE) 2006, the image of the
reconstruction of the Imperial Fora in the Early Middle Ages (Inklink) =
http://it.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/romaeterna/photos/view/9a34?b=4&m=f&o=0
When comparing this image with the earlier one of the Imperial Fora by
Inklink, I noticed several different features not shown in the original version
of the photo i.e., the latest image shows, to name a few:
1. The ruins of the Temple of Venus Genitrix
2. The ruins of the Curia (Senate House) with the construction of
medieval structures at the base of the left wall.
3. The ruins of the Forum / Temple of Peace covered over with orchards.

I was wondering if anyone also interested in or familiar with the recent
archaeological investigations in the area of the Imperial Fora of Rome could be
able to tell if this new latest image of the Imperial Fora published in the
article by R. Hodges is an revised version of the original image by Inklink or a
former version?

Thank you
Martin G Conde
